BOOMER (TOM DASCOMBE)
This filly secured a maiden victory at Newbury last July before following up in the Group 2 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood the following month. She found Powerful Breeze too hot to handle when second in the May Hill at Doncaster and ran fifth in the Fillies’ Mile. She needs to reverse the form with several of these rivals from that Newmarket performance and has an each-way chance at best.
CLOAK OF SPIRITS (RICHARD HANNON)
Represents the Richard Hannon stable who won this race with Billesdon Brook two years ago and she could outrun her price in this Classic. She caught the eye with an impressive winning debut at Ascot last July before disappointing in the May Hill at Doncaster. She was not beaten far when third in the Rockfell Stakes and it would not be a surprise if she finishes among the places.

FINAL SONG (SAEED BIN SUROOR)
Pat Cosgrave takes the ride on trainer Saeed Bin Suroor’s filly who returns to England following several runs in the Middle East earlier this year. She finished third in the UAE 1000 Guineas in January and was not beaten far in the Saudi Derby at Riyadh in February. The Godolphin runner has finished behind Raffle Prize twice on her English two-year-old form and looks an outsider here.
GRACEFUL MAGIC (EVE JOHNSON HOUGHTON)
Runs off a rating of 97 and is another outsider looking to shoot for the stars for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton. Her two-year-old form was hit and miss with victories at Sandown, Newmarket and Doncaster, before finishing behind Rose Of Kildare in the Firth Of Clyde last September. She steps up to the one-mile trip for the first time and hopefully connections secure some black-type later in the season.
LES HOGUES – (GEORGE BAKER)
The daughter of Bated Breath makes her English debut for new trainer George Baker following five-career starts last year for Jean-Claude Rouget. She was only beaten at neck behind French 1,000 Guineas winner Dream And Do at Maisons-Laffitte in Group 3 company last September. That is excellent form after Frederic Rossi’s filly claimed victory at Deauville earlier this week and last years champion apprentice Cieren Fallon takes up his first classic ride.
She looks excellent each-way value.
LOVE (AIDAN O’BRIEN)
Broke her maiden at the third time of asking at Leopardstown last July before securing black type with victory at the same venue in the Silver Flash Stakes later that month. Group 1 success came at the Curragh in the Moyglare Stakes before finishing third behind Quadrilateral at Newmarket. Aidan O’Brien is looking to win this race for the fourth time in five-seasons and she does not need to improve that much to reverse the form with Quadrilateral.
MILLISLE (JESSICA HARRINGTON)
Jessica Harrington is hoping to become the third female trainer to land the 1,000 Guineas in the past 20 years following previous success for Pam Sly and Criquette Head-Maarek. A very speedy filly as a juvenile, Millisle secured victories in the Curragh Stakes and Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. She races over the one-mile trip for the first time and could land this Classic if the distance is not an issue.
QUADRILATERAL (ROGER CHARLTON)
The big-race favourite and daughter of Frankel heads into this Classic unbeaten following three victories from three races last year. She broke her maiden at Newbury before securing an impressive nine-length success at the same venue in a conditions race last September. She ended the season in style with an eye-catching victory in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket.
She is the one to beat.
RAFFLE PRIZE (MARK JOHNSTON)
The daughter of Slade Power has a sprint pedigree and on paper this one-mile trip is very much an unknown factor for last year’s Queen Mary winner. She is rated 114 (like Quadrilateral) and Mark Johnston’s horses are in excellent form on return which is a positive. Mickael Barzalona replaces Frankie Dettori who rides for John Gosden and the French jockey is looking for his second Classic this week having won the French 2,000 Guineas on Monday.
ROMSEY (HUGHIE MORRISON)
The Daughter of Mukhadram takes her chance for trainer Hughie Morrison and looks unlikely to trouble the principal contenders. She broke her maiden at Chelmsford last summer and claimed a listed race in German last September. She is rated 97 and might develop into a middle-distance type later in the season and pay her way for connections.
ROSE OF KILDARE (MARK JOHNSTON)
Rose Of Kildare has plenty of experience having won five races from twelve career starts as a juvenile. She is another from the in-form Mark Johnston yard and races over the onE mile trip for the first time on Sunday. The daughter of Mark Believe finished behind Pinatubo in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last season and ended her two-year-old campaign with back to back victories at Group 3 level.
SHIMMERING (JOHN GOSDEN)
John Gosden has started the return to racing in the UK in excellent fashion this week and takes a punt with Shimmering with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. She lacks experience with just two-runs and a maiden success at Lingfield last December. The daughter of Lope De Vega must be showing some decent work on the gallops for connections to take a chance here and remember the Lloyd-Webber’s have previously hit the right note with some star fillies trained by Gosden.
SUMMER ROMANCE – (CHARLIE APPLEBY)
Summer Romance started her two-year-old campaign in excellent fashion with victory on debut at Yarmouth for the boys in blue. She followed up with victory in listed company on the July course at Newmarket, before finishing down the field in the Princess Margaret Stakes.
Charlie Appleby gave her a break before returning to finish third in the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes at Salisbury. The daughter of Kingman should appreciate the ground and trip and should run a respectable race under William Buick.
UNDER THE STARS (JAMES TATE)
James Tate has been improving his strike-rate and securing a better calibre of horse year on year and runs Under The Stars for principal owner Saeed Manana. She needs to reverse the form with several rivals, Love and Cloak Of Spirits from her two-year-old form and could be knocking of the door for a place if producing her best performance on return.
YES ALWAYS (KARL BURKE)
The Cool Silk Partnership has enjoyed some amazing days in recent seasons, notably with Sands Of Mali, but it would be some shock if this No Nay Never filly lands this classic. She landed her maiden on her only start to date over five-furlongs at Newcastle last October.
Karl Burke is no strange to star-quality having trained the wonderful mare Laurens, but perhaps this filly’s best chance of success will come later this season.
BIG RACE VERDICT: Having already shown her battling qualities here on the Rowley mile, Quadrilateral should have enough class and stamina to get the better of both Love and Millisle and proved trainer Roger Charlton with a first-success in the opening fillies’ Classic of the season. Raffle Prize remains an unknown over the trip and Les Hogues looks excellent each-way value at bigger prices following excellent runs behind Earthlight and Dream And Do last year.
