Horse racing tips: 3 best bets at Mahoning Valley on Wednesday night

There's nothing sloppy about our Traders picks in Uncle Sam's backyard.

16:45 Mahoning Valley: Colorincolonel @ Evs

Colorincolonel has left the bright lights of Churchhill Downs to ply his trade at a more modest level. It doesn’t get more modest than a $5,000 Allowance contest over a mile on the dirt on a cold, wet Wednesday in Ohio.

Colorincolonel has run some good races in better grade contests last December and November, so is the class act in this race. His most recent public workout on March 7 indicates to me that he has lost none of his ability and is fighting fit for today’s modest contest.

17:40 Mahoning Valley: Makes Good Sense @ 5/2

With plenty of rain forecast locally, I expect the track to ride wet to sloppy.

This should create a speed-favouring bias which plays strongly to the talents of Makes Good Sense who is a known front runner. Timeform US rate his early speed as 109, while the rest of the field have a best of 85.

This contest could be over by the bend.

Our only worry is likely to be Arazi Like Move if making a late dash, close to the line.

19:04 Mahoning Valley: Canustaytonight @ 6/4

Similar logic applies in this contest as to Makes Good Sense in the 17:40.  The expected rain and just the one front runner could play into Canustaytonight’s hands.

He has a Timeform US early speed of 91 and the next best are 74 and 65. The added bonus is that there isn’t a horse that likes to close off the pace so it’s set up for Canustaytonight to record a repeat of her coast-to-coast victory here on January 14.
