The Ryanair Chase gives the St Patrick’s Day crowd something to celebrate on day three of the Cheltenham Festival.
The Grade 1 race will take place at 2.50pm on Thursday 12 March, run on the New Course over a distance of about 2 miles 4½ furlongs with 17 fences to be jumped.
The race was among several new events introduced at the Cheltenham Festival when a fourth day was added to the meeting in 2005, effectively replacing a similar event called the Cathcart Challenge Cup.
The Ryanair Chase has a total prize fund of £350,000 and is open to horses aged five years and older.
Ruby Walsh is the leading jockey in the race with four wins, with Tony McCoy behind on three while Albertas Run is the most successful horse with two victories.
Last year Bryony Frost rode the Paul Nicholls’ trained Frodon to triumph, becoming the first woman to win a Grade 1 race over obstacles at Cheltenham.
