At Cheltenham a few years back one punter really got the crowds going – and it was good craic and got a smile out of me too.
He’d backed me in a big race on the Tuesday, the opening day. Clearly he wanted to get his Festival off to a good start – and he had a pretty unique way of going about getting me pumped up. It was a bit strange but it did entertain the spectators at the track.
I remember the guy standing a good 20 yards back from the rail with his two hands up in the air, I guess trying to get my attention. Despite the distance, I can still remember what he yelled that left the crowds in hysterics and me with a big grin on my face.
I think he thought I’d only win if he said it, and I guess there was no better chance for him to go for it. So the bloke piped up and yelled ‘come on Ruby you sexy bastard!’ at the top of his voice.
Let me tell you it was certainly a bit strange hearing that being roared at you! But fair play to the guy it was a good laugh and got a decent reaction from the crowd.
And I did find it funny too, to be fair.
What’s more, I think he landed his bet and set him up for a decent day and start to the whole festival!
