I took a battering not once but twice this weekend. The FA Cup stunner that I told you about earlier was a bet for the ages – a 2,048/1 eight-fold to a chap from Huntingdon.
And, over here in Ireland, there was a 1,637/1 five-fold on the horses which wasn’t half bad either.
This time it was a punter from Co. Galway who came up trumps with five pretty picks on Saturday. He staked a total of €8 on the five each-way selections – and all five passed the post in front to bank him €13,100.
The first winner steamed in at Wincanton when Itsonlyrocknroll (12/1) took the opening race on the card at 12,30pm, before three quick fire winners within 90 minutes at Sandown, Cork and Newcastle left me with distinctly sweaty palms.
At Newcastle, Domaine De Lisle (3/1) galloped home in the 1.30pm, before Locker Room Talk (11/4) just held on by a head in the 2m Handicap Chase at Sandown 1.50pm.
When Morosoni (9/4f, but took the morning price of 3/1) was a comfortable winner five minutes later at Cork in the 1.55pm, that was four out of the five selections in the bag and a bumper payday riding on Jepeck in the Veterans Chase at Sandown 3pm.
Racing – like fishing – is full of hard luck stories about the one that got away.
However, our man and Jepeck (3/1f ) were in no mood to be denied as he clung on by a short-head at the post to thwart Regal Flow with Theatre Guide just a further neck away in third to land a Super Saturday wager.
This bloke clearly knows more about horses than I ever will. And I’m hosting a bloody podcast about them!
And by the way, it’s the second big racing five-fold I’ve paid out in the past 10 days.
If you haven’t read it, we had another punter turn €1 into €2,329 with this genius horse racing bet last week.
Our lucky punter’s picks on Saturday:
- Wincanton 12.30 – Itsonlyrocknroll to win at 12/1
- Newcastle 13.30 – Domaine De Lisle to win at 3/1
- Sandown 13.50 – Locker Room Talk to win at 11/4
- Cork 13.55 – Morosini to win at 3/1
Sandown 15.00 – Jepeck to win at 7/2
