Musselburgh 12.45 – Homing Star @ 5/1

Homing Star makes his handicap debut over hurdles after three uninspiring efforts over hurdles to date. There is every reason to believe that he will improve for the switch to handicaps, as he was a winner on the Flat last season off a mark of 51 when trained by Jonathon Portman.

In that race he beat Poucor (was giving him 4lbs) and Foresee (was in receipt of 18lbs) and they are now rated 114 & 104 over hurdles respectively, so Homing Star’s opening mark of 92 is workable.

Add in that the trainer, Graham McPherson, has had two winners and three seconds from just eight runners at Musseburgh in the past five years and all of a sudden confidence in the selection heightens a little.

Gemologist is the danger but that one is still a maiden after a total of 22 starts in all codes and maybe Homing Star can get off the mark over hurdles in this weak affair.

Wolverhampton 18.45 – Innamorare

Innamorare attracted some support in the market, despite being a big price, when striking at Dundalk last time out in what looked a very competitive handicap for the grade. She has been raised 5lbs to a mark of 83 but that is only 1lb higher than the mark she ran off when second in the BMW mile handicap at the Galway Festival in the summer and that was an extremely competitive affair.

This may be a class two handicap but it looks weaker than both the Dundalk and Galway contests and as long as she runs up to form, she can enhance the impressive strike rate with his runners in the UK for the excellent Gavin Cromwell.
