Ruby Walsh’s tips: My nifty 9 at Punchestown and Cork on Sunday

Our top racing pundit is here to give us the inside track.

Ruby Walsh pose

Punchestown 12:05

Yanworth has been rerouted from Cheltenham to this one at Punchestown and I doubt that there has been too many higher profile or higher class horses than him that have gone cross-country. It will certainly be interesting to see how he gets on.

Punchestown 13:05

Willie runs two in the 2m 2f mares hurdle in Eglantine Du Seuil, ridden by Rachael Blackmore and Stormy Ireland with Paul Townend on board, while Gordon Elliott’s Barra is in the mix too. Being honest though, this should be a straightforward affair for Stormy Ireland to take.

Punchestown 14:15

In the Auction Maiden Hurdle Willie enters Enfant Du Mou, who is ridden by Paul Townend. He’s a fine big horse, who jumps well and stays galloping. He should give a good account of himself in this one.

Punchestown 14:50

The likes of Battleoverdoyen, Dandy Mag (ridden by Danny Mullins), Sayo (with Paul Townend onboard) and Any Second Now make this a top-class race. However, if Battleoverdoyen is going to live up to his reputation, he should be able to take care of these. But, don’t be surprised if Any Second Now runs a lot better than he did in Cork.

Punchestown 15:20

Gwencily Berbas for Eric McNamara catches the eye in this handicap chase. If you want another one, Roxboro Road for my father Ted should give you two to go against the field with.

Punchestown 15:50

The last on the card is the 2m bumper where Patrick Mullins rides Dewcup. I reckon he’ll make it a profitable day for Patrick, who will have been at Cork earlier in the day.

Cork 12:15

Patrick Mullins rides in the opening maiden hurdle at Cork and that’s where we introduce one of our nice novices, Jon Snow, to the world. But, he’ll have to be able to go a bit to beat Joseph O’Brien’s Front View. Front View was behind Envoi Allen at Down Royal, so Jon Snow will have to get his finger out if he wants to win here.

Cork 12:50

Last year’s Punchestown Champion Bumper winner Colreevy makes her seasonal debut here and I believe she’ll be much too good for the challenge of Conflated.

Cork 14:35

I reckon Willie Mullins has found an absolutely beautiful opportunity for Stones and Roses to score. He’ll love the ground and the trip, but he’s a sound jumper too!
