Ruby Walsh: Wicklow Brave leads my five to follow at Listowel on Sunday

An old favourite has tickled Ruby’s eye!

Listowel 14:30 – Stratum

Jaime Sommers and Dr Mikey are both frontrunners in the Kerrymaid Hurdle at 14:30. But, while they battle it out, that should set the race up nicely for Stratum – with Paul Townend on board – to pounce.

Listowel 15:35 – Castello Sforza

Willie Mullins runs Zola in the Charleville Cheese Maiden Hurdle, but it’s an ex-teammate of Willie’s in the form of Castello Sforza who could prove the hardest to beat here. He was very close to winning a Cheltenham bumper once upon a time, when he finished fourth. He’s since moved to Padraig Roche after an injury and he could be in a different league to the rest in this race.

Listowel 16:10 – Wicklow Brave

The seemingly ever-youthful Wicklow Brave goes to war again here in the Cheestrings Novice Chase at 4.10. I believe he’ll be too good for Dinons and his schooling has improved since his win in Galway. He looks to be in good form and this could set him up nicely for a tilt at the American Grand National.

Listowel 16:40 – Cabaret Queen

The Kerry Group Handicap Chase (16:40) is an ultra-competitive affair. Ask Susan, the mount of Paul Townend and Cabaret Queen, with David Mullins in the saddle, go at it here. Gwencily Berbas makes his debut for Eric McNamara, while The Big Lense could be well handicapped for Gordon Elliott. It’s Cabaret Queen is in good nick at home, so she could sneak it. I reckon Ask Susan would want a little further in trip.

Listowel 17:10 – Mountainmore

The Kerry Group INH Flat Race is the lucky last on the day. Mountainmore was more than disappointing at Kilbeggan and we were very happy with our homework going there. But, we reckon fitness may have taken its toll. With the run under the belt, we hope Mountainmore can make up for that flop.
