14:20 Goodwood – La Maquina @ 7/1
La Maquina is one I’m very interested in here for George Baker. He was very disappointing at Kempton last time though missed the break and faced an impossible task, with the 1 mile trip also possibly against him.
On his penultimate start at Kempton he recorded an extremely fast closing sectional for the grade, when getting up late to win a Class 4 handicap, from a long way back in a race that was not run to suit those held up.
He’s off just a 1lb higher mark here and if he can translate that AW run to turf, he should take a lot of beating in a relatively weak handicap.
15:30 Goodwood – Fifth Position @ 3/1
Private Secretary could be a warm order here for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori, though I’m keen to take him on with the unexposed Fifth Position. He looked a horse to follow at Nottingham last time when beating subsequent winner Space Blues, who showed what an electric turn of foot he has when winning at York last week.
That Fifth Position was able to beat him in a slowly-run affair before that, suggests he’s a horse with a lot of ability.
He’s stepping up in trip to 1m 3f today, though he shapes as if it could suit. If he sees out the trip he should give the favourite plenty to think about.
