Jason Weaver: Six super picks who’ll be in the mix at Fundalk and Newcastle on Friday

The Shark is on the prowl once again...

18:15 Newcastle

Having been gelded since his last run, Lord Caprio routed the opposition over slightly further and made a mockery of his handicap mark. He gets in here with only a six-pound penalty and surely that won’t be enough to stop him doing the business for Ben Haslam.

He’s very much in the mould of his father Patrick – once they start winning they just keep on rolling. Let’s get off to a flyer in the nursery.

19:15 Newcastle

Big Lachie has only been with this stable for a handful of races. He ran his best race over course and distance last time when only just failing to reel in Casterbridge. Since joining the stable he’s dropped 9 pounds in the ratings, and has been nudged back up two by the handicapper for that latest effort.

But that shouldn’t stop him going to the winners enclosure here.

20:45 Newcastle

Insurplus was a very unlucky loser behind Honey Badger last time at this track. He found himself in a pocket on the stand rail with nowhere to go, and in the end was beaten by just under one length – surely with a clear passage he would’ve been successful.

We have a senior rider taking over in the saddle and he can reverse that form even off a one-pound higher handicap rating.

17:30 Dundalk

Everybody had to do a double take as far as the PhotoFinish was concerned when Aggression was beaten a nose just a week ago. The bulb didn’t go his way on that occasion and hopefully tonight his luck will change.

It’s a massive opportunity for his rider Thomas Sherry, who takes off a very valuable ten pounds and is looking for his first success on the rules.

20:30 Dundalk

Invincible Ryker is bidding to maintain his 100% record on the all-weather at Fundalk for the all-conquering Halford operation.

He’s a low-mileage improver from a top operation and it’s pleasing to see Ross Coakley get on a live one – he doesn’t always get the opportunities his ability deserves.

This horse likes to go handy, as his maiden success shows, so stall nine is not a worry.

21:00 Dundalk

Clare Island caught the eye last time out, making stealthy headway late on after being held up in the early stages.

She now steps into handicap company off what looks like a very workable mark. Most of the others have done their winning or are finding it hard to win off their current rating. She comes in here as a big big improver.
