Lockheed – Newmarket 2.55pm
Lockheed didn’t improve on his third in the Acomb Stakes at York when filling the same position in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh last time, but ran well enough behind the hot Dewhurst favourite Churchill. He is back in calmer waters at Newmarket on Saturday, and there is enough stamina on his dam’s side to suggest that this step up to a mile will be within his range. He may well even improve for the extra furlong and should run well for the in-form William Haggas yard.
St Michel – Newmarket 4.10pm
The Cesarewitch has produced a few shock results in recent years but those at the front of the market seem to have very strong claims this time around, with St Michel and Sweet Selection both well-in at the weights after both posting much-improved performances in the Doncaster Cup after the weights for this race were released. St Michel was ahead of Sweet Selection at Doncaster and has not stopped improving this season, so gets the vote as he bids to become the first three-year-old to win the race since Darley Sun in 2009.
