13:15 Francesco Guardi
Francesco Guardi is bred to excel over middle distances – he is by Frankel out of a half-sister to Treve – so it bodes well that he was quick enough to win a seven-furlong novice at Salisbury on debut last July. He then produced an even better effort in defeat when third in the listed Denford Stakes at Newbury, where he was beaten only a length and a half despite still looking in need of the experience. It’s easy to overlook a short-price flop on his final start of the campaign – he jumped a path and lost ground after two furlongs – and he starts out in handicap company on a potentially lenient mark.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
13:50 Global Storm
Global Storm was successful at this course on his final start as a two-year-old, and he showed he had trained on well when winning here on his return last season. Global Storm hasn’t quite reached that level in three subsequent starts, but there have been excuses, most notably at Meydan last time when he got shuffled back two furlongs out. He finished well when in the clear, however, on his first start over a mile and a half, and he remains open to improvement over this trip.
14:25 A’Shaari
A’Shaari is regally bred – she’s a sister to dual Group 1 winner Wuheida – and she created an excellent impression when making a successful debut on the July course last season. A’Shaari understandably showed signs of inexperience, edging left under pressure, but it didn’t prevent her from drawing three and a half lengths clear. She is a hugely exciting prospect.
15:00 Fooraat
Fooraat has an eye-catching pedigree – she is by Dubawi and out of dual Group 1 winner Nahrain – and she looked like a filly to follow when winning her first couple of starts, notably bolting up in a novice at Chelmsford on her reappearance last season. She failed to build on that in three starts later in the campaign but made a pleasing return at Kempton last month when runner-up to Lavender’s Blue. That does not represent the limit of her ability and she should appreciate this slight step up in trip.
15:40 Mother Earth
Mother Earth put in a few disappointing efforts after winning a six-furlong Group 3 at Naas but she bounced right back with an excellent third in the Fillies’ Mile over this course and distance, relishing the step up to a mile. She ran to a similar level when runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, arguably doing well to grab that position keeping in mind how much ground she had to make up. Stablemate Santa Barbara has been all the rage in the betting but Mother Earth has the form in the book and should not be underestimated.

16:15 Secret Strength
It could be worth concentrating on Secret Strength and My Dubawi, the two newcomers, as the runners with experience don’t set a high standard. Secret Strength’s sales price rose markedly from a yearling to two-year-old (he was sold for 155,000 guineas) and there is plenty of speed in his pedigree, which offers hope he will be sharp enough to make a winning start. Trainer Richard Hannon has also made a good start with his juveniles this season.
16:50 Annandale
All four of these have claims but Annandale makes most appeal on the back of his win at Nottingham last month. Annandale kept on well to win that mile-and-a-quarter handicap by a neck, and he will be well suited by stepping up another couple of furlongs here. He boasts a good strikerate (has won three of his five starts), is progressive and can launch another bold bid.
17:20 Tawleed
Tawleed failed to meet expectations on his handicap debut at Kempton in March but things didn’t go smoothly on that occasion and he is worth another chance. Tawleed dived left leaving the stalls and was then hampered and had to be snatched up. He made good headway to hold every chance over a furlong out but was unable to sustain the effort and had to settle for fourth. Some of his two-year-old form is working out well and he can show he’s a well-handicapped horse.
