13:55 Royaume Uni
Royaume Uni had to settle for second behind Herbiers when well backed on his handicap debut at Ascot last month but can turn the tables here. That was Royaume Uni’s best effort over hurdles so far, but his performances in a jumpers’ bumper and a Flat handicap at Lingfield suggest that he has the ability to reach a higher rating. The lightly raced four-year-old can show he is still a well-handicapped hurdler.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
14:30 Mister Fisher
This should develop into a match between Mister Fisher and Frodon, with the former making most appeal. There’s not a lot between them on ratings but Mister Fisher is the speedier of the pair and that extra pace will prove crucial in this small field and on decent ground. Mister Fisher has failed to complete on his last two starts but he offered enough both times to suggest that he remains in good form.
15:05 Sceau Royal
Sceau Royal has finished runner-up to Altior on four occasions, including in this race in 2019, but he can finally have his day in the sun. There’s a query about whether Altior is the force of old but Sceau Royal looked as good as ever when an unlucky fifth in the Champion Chase last month, doing well to get as close as he did given how badly he was hampered after the third-last. He had previously been an impressive winner of the Game Spirit Chase and will have conditions in his favour at Sandown.
15:40 Enrilo
Enrilo was a talented hurdler – he notably won the Grade 2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle here last season – and he has taken well to chasing, winning two of his four starts over fences. He found Grade 1 company beyond him when pulled up in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day but he bounced back to form on his handicap chase debut at Newbury in February, winning with more in hand than the margin of half a length would suggest. He might still be a step ahead of the handicapper and looks worth a crack at this distance.
16:15 Younevercall
Younevercall impressed when winning this race in 2019, taking control early in the straight and pulling nine lengths clear of his rivals. He missed last season but proved he retains his ability with an excellent second off a lofty mark at Kempton in November, going down by just a short head. He ran another fine race when fourth in the Long Walk Hurdle, and, while he’s not been so good the last twice, he will find this a suitable test.

16:50 Killer Clown
Killer Clown offered some promise over hurdles last season but has quickly developed into a much better chaser. The novice handicap chase at Kempton on Boxing Day is always a competitive affair but Killer Clown ran out an authoritative winner, scoring by seven and a half lengths after impressing with how smoothly he travelled and how fluently he jumped. He produced an even better effort when runner-up in the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury last time and could still have more to offer.
17:25 Cascova
A tendency to pull hard hampered Cascova in the early part of his career but he has been more relaxed on his last couple of starts and has shown improved form as a consequence. Cascova was presented with a good opportunity in a maiden hurdle at Ascot last time but he made the most of it, easily brushing his rivals aside. His strong-travelling style marks him down as a horse who should cope well with the demands of a soundly-run handicap on decent ground.
