The first English Classics – the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas – take place at Newmarket on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.

Paddy Power Trader Frank Hickey and top pundit Ruby Walsh assess the field on the latest edition of Paddy Power’s From the Horses Mouth podcast, ahead of next week’s meeting.

Saturday, May 1 – 2000 Guineas

Racing icon Ruby Walsh admitted it’s hard to pick a winner out of the tight field but he is being drawn towards the Richard Hannon-trained Chindit.

Speaking on the latest episode of From the Horses Mouth podcast, Ruby said: “There’s not much between St Marks Basilica and Wembley. Thunder Moon looks an incredibly fast horse but the question over him is stamina. I’m potentially drawn towards Chindit but it’s hard to make a big case for him.

“Looking at Richard Hannon’s 2000 Guineas winners, they’ve had a run under their belt and Chindit has had that too. There isn’t really a standout here. We haven’t seen enough of them coming into this one. Has One Ruler improved? We don’t know. It’s not easy to pick a winner. I think I’ll be waiting until closer to the time.”

Frank Hickey discussed Master Of The Seas and One Ruler, revealing the pair have been heavily backed heading into the Colts’ Classic.

He said: “Master Of The Seas is one we laid at 20/1 prior to the Craven Stakes at Newmarket a week ago and we went 12/1 after he won it. It’s currently the worst result for us. He’s been weak on the exchanges in recent days, suggesting all may not be well but he did tighten up a little since then. He was 10/1 over the winter and was trimmed again and we are the standout price at time of recording.”

On One Ruler, Frank added: “One Ruler is one that shortened up over a week ago, was 10/1 into 8/1 and then the price collapsed after the Godolphin 1-2 in the Craven Stakes, suggesting that he is better than Master Of The Seas and La Barossa.

He is now favourite with us but isn’t a bad result at this stage.”

Santa Barbara is currently the favourite for the Fillies’ Classic, however, Ruby will be looking elsewhere in the form of Pretty Gorgeous.

He said: “There was plenty of chat for Snow Lantern over the last few weeks, Pretty Gorgeous has been rock solid all year and Alcohol Free has looked good. If you pushed me to pick a winner now, there’s no way you could back Santa Barbara as favourite without an inside steer. I will be going somewhere else and I think that’ll be with Pretty Gorgeous.”

Frank discussed market movements ahead of 1000 Guineas, with the Paddy Power Trader claiming there’s big interest in Santa Barbara and Snow Lantern.

He said: “Santa Barbara was a huge mover due to Aidan O’Brien’s very positive comments. She was 10/1 the weekend after Cheltenham but is favourite now on the back of one start, when winning a Curragh maiden last September.

Snow Lantern was one we laid to shrewd accounts at 25/1 and we cut her as she was impressive when beating two good Colts in what looked a very good maiden at Newbury last weekend.”
