13.50, Newmarket – Cairn Island

ITV coverage on Thursday gets underway with this handicap over 6f at Newmarket. CAIRN ISLAND is a decent each-way bet with more to come from the Kevin Ryan gelding, ridden by Andrea Atzeni. The son of Kodiac won at Ayr and York last term before what looks like a poor seventh at Doncaster when up 10lb. However, my hope stumbled at the start that day and ran much better than the positions suggest.

14.05, Cheltenham – Table Mountain

ITV are also showing two races at Cheltenham, starting with this juvenile handicap hurdle over 2m1f which is a Grade 3. I’ll risk TABLE MOUNTAIN here for Tom Symonds and Ben Poste. The youngster gets in with just 10st, and has been far from disgraced in his last three starts at Hereford, Huntingdon and Doncaster. He has to do more here but I don’t think his handicap mark is impossible and he would be a big winner for the very capable Poste.

14.25, Newmarket – Kingsofthemidlands

Now the famous Wood Ditton Maiden, which often throws up a good one over 1m. Guessing here, but I’ll go with KINGSOFTHEMIDLANDS who cost a few quid at €600,000 for Andrew Balding and Silvestre de Sousa. The son of Kingman is bred to go a bit and it might not be the strongest renewal of this race ever with one of the Gosden runners gelded already.

14.40, Cheltenham – Bourbon Beauty

ITV are beaming this Listed mares’ handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f, which is a wide open event. BOURBON BEAUTY won well from the front at Newbury last time and while she’s up 8lb in the handicap, she might be hard to catch. The Alex Hales runner is ridden by Harry Bannister and is another with just 10st to carry which is going to help her cause.

15.00, Newmarket – Oxted

The big sprint here in the Group 3 Abernant over 6f. This seems easy with OXTED looking a class above most of these for Roger Teal and Cieren Fallon. The July Cup winner was no good in Riyadh last time on the dirt, but back to grass here he should take care of this lot with a BHA rating of 120. There’s nothing to trouble him on paper.

15.35, Newmarket – La Barrosa

Now it’s the big Classic trial for the colts in the Group 3 Craven over 1m. Very tough to sort this lot out, but I’ll take a chance with the Charlie Appleby second string in LA BARROSA who is ridden by the excellent James Doyle. The son of Lope de Vega scored nicely at Ascot and Newmarket last season before tailing off in the Group 1 Criterium at Saint-Cloud. That’s easily forgotten as it was on heavy going. Hopefully he’s done well during the winter and he might just be a little each-way value.
