There’s more dual purpose action on ITV4 on Thursday with two races from Cheltenham and four from Newmarket.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Newmarket 13.50 – Cairn Island
This son of Kodiac has been gelded since his run at Doncaster last season. CAIRN ISLAND looked unfurnished then and could be a big improver this term. Rohan was the beneficiary of a brilliant Ryan Moore ride at Lingfield last time while Creative Force could be part of a big week for Charlie Appleby.
Cheltenham 14:05 – Scholastic
Fiveandtwenty ran a decent race at Aintree last week, finishing third to Monmiral in the Grade 1. She does not look badly handicapped, but it is a very quick turnaround from that run and that is a worry.
Her Indoors and Talking About You both ran at Cheltenham and Her Indoors will be better suited to this test than when unplaced in the Boodles Hurdle at Cheltenham. Joseph O’Brien sends SCHOLASTIC over from Ireland and this daughter of Zoffany ran really well at Fairyhouse when third to Jeff Kidder (who was following up his Boodles Hurdle win). She looks well handicapped off a mark of 121.
Cheltenham 14:40 – Eglantine Du Seuil
Sexy Lot Has been a revelation for the Pipe team she has climbed through the handicap ranks. Despite winning last time, she faded a little close home and is 5lbs higher which will make life more difficult. Alex Hales’ Bourbon. Beauty has done brilliantly, she won a nice prize at Newbury last time and can’t be ruled out. Molly Olly’s Wishes was on a roll this season and ran a blinder at Fontwell.
EGLANTINE DU SEUIL hinted at a return to her best form a couple of times this season and this could be her chance to shine.
Newmarket 14.25 – Valiant Prince
The market is the best guide to this as these are unraced three-years-old. Trainers are creatures of habit and very often you will see them introduce their best horses in the same races and then follow a similar route to the big targets. No one trainer has dominated this contest over the last 10 seasons and only three favourites have won it in that time.
Of the bigger stables, VALIANT PRINCE represents Godolphin (who won it in 2017), This Dubawi colt’s dam won the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown a few years back so he is bred in the purple. I will take a punt on him.

Newmarket 15:00 Oxted
Roger Teal’s won this contest last year with OXTED before going on to win the July Cup. He’s already had a run this season when down the filed in Saudi Arabia, but sets the standard.
The consistent Summerghand boosted his win ratio after scoring at Lingfield on All Weather Finals day while Emaraaty Ana showed something of his old sparkle when second in the Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster on the opening weekend of the Flat turf season.
Newmarket 15.35 Master of the Seas
Charlie Appleby’s runner has the hood on to help him settle. He was last seen at Meydan when finishing second at long odds-on to Naval Crown who finished second at Newmarket on Wednesday in the Free Handicap. Jockey William Buick has deserted La Barossa for MASTER OF THE SEAS so he obviously thinks he has a better chance of winning and that sways it for me.
Aidan O’Brien’s Khartoum is an interesting runner as is stablemate Sandhurst with Frankie Dettori on board.
