We’re going to try a big priced e/w double on the Friday card at Newcastle.

16:30 Newcastle – Medicine Jack

This is a moderate seven-furlong handicap. Only one of the contenders has finished in the places in their most recent starts which leads me to think the race won’t take much winning. Medicine Jack makes plenty of appeal dropping into Class six company and with Ben Sanderson’s three pounds claim also likely to aid his cause.

The horse is yet to taste success in his 16 runs since joining the stable but a delve into his form shows that this gelding should be more than capable of winning this. Formerly trained by Ger Lyons in Ireland the horse ran in the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket as a two-year-old and although clearly not living up to expectations he amassed considerable prize money before changing hands.

He didn’t enjoy the fibresand at Southwell on his latest start and has never been beaten by any more than three lengths in his five races at this venue. Medicine Jack is dropping down the weights and with the jockeys three pounds claim, along with being aided with the moderate opposition I think it’s a case of now or never for him today.

17:30 Newcastle – Another Angel

Paul Midgley’s in form Buniann certainly looks the one to beat in this trappy five-furlong sprint. The race looks sure to be run to suit this fast finisher with the early paced Another Angel in the line-up. However, I think there could be plenty of value in an each-way play on the latter.

Another Angel was awkward at the start and had to burn up too much fuel getting to the front over course and distance when beaten less than three lengths last week. Anthony Brittain’s seven-year-old gelding is running off a mark 2 pounds lower than when beaten favourite here two starts back and one pound lower than his last winning mark which was in September here, again over course and distance.

He wins when least expected as evidenced by his 25/1 price in that latest victory. The trainer’s horses are running well for the last number of weeks and the price never puts me off when it comes to Anthony Brittain’s horses. Six of his last nine runners have at least made the frame with one winner in that list. Some of his recently placed horses were returned at odds of 11/1, 12/1 and 28/1.

I think Another Angel warrants serious respect off this mark and should be good enough to at least make the frame in this.
