17.10 – Khatm (NAP)

KHATM is improving all the time and showed fairly useful form to bring up his fifth success of the winter at Southwell 11 days ago. Held up in the early stages, he made good headway to lead entering the final furlong and kept going well to land the spoils by a length in decisive fashion. He shaped as if likely to be suited by the step back up in trip here, tackling the longest distance he has encountered since recording his first win of the campaign at Chelmsford in February.

Remarkably, Khatm still hasn’t reached his ceiling yet, so a further 4lb rise in the weights might not be enough to prevent him from bringing up his sixth all-weather victory for George Boughey, who continues in red-hot form with eight winners from 26 runners (31 per cent strike rate) in March.

19.40 – For Peat’s Sake (NB)

FOR PEAT’S SAKE produced a career-best effort in first-time cheekpieces to get off the mark at Newcastle two weeks ago, comfortably defying a BHA mark of 62. He raced just behind the leaders and was ultimately well on top at the finish after being produced to lead a furlong out, beating an in-form rival by a length. This will be tougher from 5lb higher in the weights, but For Peat’s Sake may yet have more to offer now that he’s in the winning groove.

A quirky sort, he is fancied to mount a bold follow-up bid if the headgear continues to have the desired effect, lining up over a course and distance where he was beaten less than a length on just his second start for Michael Appleby (formerly trained by John Gosden) in February.

20.10 – Must Be An Angel (Each-Way)

MUST BE AN ANGEL is still a maiden after 13 starts, but there is no doubt she is on a good mark judged on the pick of her efforts. Admittedly, her latest outing when down the field at this course wasn’t one of them, but she had valid excuses after a slow start, being left with too much to do and never managing to land a blow on the principals. She has come down slightly in the weights since then to a BHA mark of 60, which is much lower than when placed on a couple of occasions last season. It’s still relatively early days with the David Loughnane yard, too, so Must Be An Angel could be worth another chance in what looks a wide-open contest despite the small field.
