PPTV’s Graham Temple has given the Newcastle card the once over and come up with a massive price each-way double for us this Thursday evening. It’s a small stake bet I like to play where the place part of the double can yield a nice return whilst the ‘miracle’ hit always has a chance if your luck is in.

20:00 Newcastle – Jeddeyd

The in-form Brian Ellison will be looking to resume winning ways with Pallas Dancer after the gelding’s winning run came to an end when he was touched off by a half a length last month at Wolverhampton. He certainly warrants respect and looks a leading player in this weak contest. Another to consider is Alistair Whillans’ The Brora Pobbles who finally lost its maiden tag at the 18th time of asking over course and distance on Feb 20th.

However, I’m going to chance one here that should be a nice each-way backable price in Jeddeyd. A quick look at this horse’s form and they’ll probably send the men in the white coats out for me but let’s have a deeper look. Jeddeyd is only having his third start for Mark Loughnane and he’s booked Hollie Doyle for the ride. The horse is sporting first-time cheekpieces. Jeddeyd showed ability when only beaten less than three lengths on debut at Wolverhampton back in September.

In fairness, his last few efforts were bordering on brutal, however, he is down in the weights tonight and drops into Class Six company. Mark Loughnane has proved a profitable trainer to follow on the All-Weather this season with 33 of the 82 horses he’s sent to post at least making the frame and 13 of those passing the post in front. I’m hoping for a decent each-way price and will take him to start off our e/w double.

8.30 Newcastle – Greyfire

Crantock Bay arrives here on a recovery mission having got his head stuck over an adjoining gate when a warm order favourite here on Jan 28th. He was well backed that day having knocked hard on the door in his two starts before that luckless effort. It’ll be no surprise to see him repay his supporters with a victory here. The market is likely to be top-heavy though and there could be plenty of value in an each-way play on David Barron’s Greyfire. The 4-year-old gelding is only having his third All-Weather start tonight and first here at Newcastle. Things happened too quickly for him over an inadequate six furlongs at Southwell last time out where he finished last of three beaten just over four lengths.

His trainer is not averse to winning with one at a decent price and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this unexposed sort getting involved in the shakeup at decent odds. David Barron has had two winners and two placed horses from his last eight runners including a 22/1 runner up here at Newcastle last Friday. With the trainer’s horses in fine form, I’m happy to chance Greyfire each-way at the likely big odds.
