19:45 Arij (NAP)

A winner at Chelmsford in December, Arij has showed improved form in his last couple of outings and has been unfortunate not to have added to his tally. He did plenty in front at Chelmsford last month, quickening clear on the home turn but just collared late on by one who came from behind.

Connections will again feel aggrieved that he couldn’t get his head back in front at Lingfield last time, kicking on on the home turn but bumped in the final half furlong, causing his rider to drop his whip. He finished second to Dark Pine on that occasion but, given he meets that rival on 2 lb better terms here, he is take to reverse the placings.

18:45 Liverpool Knight (NB)

Liverpool Knight is certainly well bred – a Golden Horn colt who is a half-brother to three winners, including the smart Aljazzi – and he shaped promisingly when sixth at this venue on his debut last month, held back by inexperience but finishing well.

He was again found wanting for know-how when fifth at Lingfield last time, running green and looking in need of a stiffer test, but he remains open to improvement and is still one to be positive about, particularly when considering his pedigree, and the fact that he hails from the powerful John Gosden yard. This step up in trip should show him to better effect and he looks worth another chance to open his account.

17:15 Pope Gregory (E/W)

Pope Gregory showed improved form for the switch to Chelmsford’s all-weather surface for Mick Channon last year, recording back-to-back victories at the Essex track in October, both those successes coming over a mile.

He ran with plenty of credit in his failed hat-trick attempt in November, that coming over seven furlongs, but he found his good run of form coming to an end when seventh over 10f at the same venue last time, looking unsuited by the step back up in trip. He is returned to a mile here, surely his optimum distance, and he cannot be dismissed on his first run for James Unett’s yard.
