4.40pm – Aureum
This fillies’ novice stakes, for three-year-olds and older, is probably the most significant race on the card with a number of top stables represented, along with six of the 13 runners being newcomers.
Of the debutants, it’s the Charlie Appleby-trained New Exceed which is the most intriguing given that this is the first horse owner Sultan Ali has had with the Newmarket-based trainer. By New Approach out of two-time Listed winner La Arenosa, this filly is the mount of Hollie Doyle, who takes just her second-ever ride for Appleby – so that is a notable booking. What will also be significant will be any market support for the debutant as she looks the one filly in the race with the most potential.
The other newcomer worth a mention is Technique, given the rare appointment of Cieran Fallon by trainer Martyn Meade. But on form, AUREUM is the horse to beat and there is every reason to suggest that John Gosden’s four-year-old can make it third time lucky. She was lame post-race when finishing fifth on her debut at Kempton last June, after a very slow start, and then another sturdy exit from the stalls contributed heavily to her finishing third at the same track last month, a race where she met with plenty of trouble in-running too.
The step back to 1m1f will be ideal and she’s the mount of upcoming apprentice Benoit De La Sayette, who is four out of 11 since joining the jockey ranks. Not just that, but he has also ridden a winner for John Gosden on his only ride for the trainer this year – another Godolphin-owned horse in Law Of The Sun – and he already appears to be excellent value for his 7lbs claim. With the youngster riding so well, he can be the key to helping Aureum break her maiden tag at Wolverhampton.

5.40pm – Mdina
The second of the card’s classified stakes looks the least competitive of the two and while pervious Wolverhampton winners Born To Reason and Star Ascending will have their followers, there’s every reason to suggest that one further down the weights might be well-handicapped here.
On her last two starts, things haven’t worked out for MDINA but she has ran with credit on both occasions. Last month at Chelmsford, over a similar trip, she was possibly given too much to do when finishing fast to claim the runner-up spot in a race where the third-placed horse Zayriyan has since won. Then 11 days ago at the same track, she saw very little luck in-running when finishing fifth and beaten just over three lengths.
There’s no doubt that she would have gone close on that occasion given a clear run, and having dropped 1lb since then, she must have every chance of gaining compensation here. Throw in the added bonus that she’s the mount of Jack Mitchell, who rode two winners over the weekend.
