12:40 Ruby Red Empress

RUBY RED EMPRESS showed ability for Amanda Perrett last year, running her best race when stepped up to this trip for the first time at Sandown in September. She was picked up by new connections for 9,000 guineas after and made a very encouraging start over this course and distance earlier this month, likely to have gone close to winning with a clearer run. Ruby Red Empress travelled better than most on that occasion, but was short of room on the home turn and again found trouble a furlong from home. Voi finished in front of her that day, but Ruby Red Empress shaped as though ahead of her mark, and is expected to go close.

13:15 Power Of States

This will be the most competitive race that POWER OF STATES has contested, but he is progressing at a rate of knots at present, and is well-in turned out under a 5 lb penalty following last week’s Wolverhampton romp. This will be his first start on the all-weather track at Lingfield, but it shouldn’t pose a problem, and there should be even more to come from him judged by the way he powered away from his rivals last time.

13:50 Sir Edward Elgar

This doesn’t look the strongest race of its type and SIR EDWARD ELGAR is fancied to open his account at the third attempt. He was disappointing when starting the 11/8-on favourite at Newcastle last time, but he was never going with any zest, so it is probably best not to judge him too harshly on that effort, and is worth chancing to build on his debut promise now. That was a promising first effort in a decent looking race, and just a reproduction of that form will see him go close here.

14:25 Invincible Larne

A tightly-knit sprint handicap, but preference is for INVINCIBLE LARNE, who has been in top form this winter. He recorded his first win for over a year when scoring over this trip at Chelmsford in November, landing some nice bets and always looking in control. Invincible Larne was again all the rage in the betting but was unable to follow up back at five furlongs, but he has found only one to good on his last two starts and has to be high on the shortlist again. He was only headed on the line by a thriving sort who came from further back over course and distance last time and Invincible Larne still appears to be getting better.

15:00 Lyrica’s Lion

This could get tactical with no obvious pace in the race, so LYRICA’S LION, who has winning form over much shorter trips, could be worth chancing on return from a break. He hasn’t won for over two years, and wasn’t in much form when last seen, but has been freshened up since and this shouldn’t take much winning. Aleatoric didn’t look straightforward under pressure when last seen but is a threat from his basement mark.

15:35 Shamshon

SHAMSHON went winless last year, but his handicap mark fell as a result, and he returned to form to take advantage of a career-low mark earlier this month when a good winner over this course and distance. He travelled well on that occasion, and wasn’t bothered by being pushed wide on the home turn, showing a good turn of foot in the final 100 yards to power away from his rivals. Shamshon hasn’t been disgraced in two starts since, beaten only by a progressive, well-handicapped sort who has since won again over six furlongs here last week. Shamshon races from the same mark now and looks a big player once more.

16:05 Supercontango

SUPERCONTANGO showed plenty of ability amidst greenness when second on debut at Chelmsford and could improve enough to go one place better in a thin event for the in-form Archie Watson. Passionova is an interesting newcomer, though and Tributo, who unseated at the start when odds on for the aforementioned Chelmsford maiden, also retains potential.
