Horse Racing Tips: 5 best bets at Meydan today including a 16/1 play

Paddy's racing trader Donal McKenna delivers his best bets for today's action at Meydan in Dubai including the 16/1 Roman Rosso at 16:50.

15:05 Communique (E/W)

I really fancy Communique here in the listed handicap, he has developed into a real Group 1 performer over the last two years and Saeed Bin Ghadayer has a knack of improving any horse he gets from Europe. I think its fair to say there are some fitness concerns here given Saeed will be working backwards from Dubai World Cup night via Saudi Cup night but at an each way price and Paddy Power offering an extra place I am happy to take my chances.

15:40 Gladiator King

I think I may very well be guilty of being a fanboy of Gladiator King, he was my standout performer of last years shortened Carnival and he really is custom built for Meydan in his run style. I cannot see past him here and if short priced favourites are not your thing bet him on the winning distance markets at a bigger price.

16:15 Military March (NAP)

This is a real throwback to a simpler time, Frankie Dettori and Saeed Bin Suroor with a really solid favourite that I expect to go into the Dubai World Cup night as a leading protagonist. Military March was a lot of people’s dark horse going into last season. He ran a belter in the 2000 Guineas and was near favourite for the Derby for a time but didn’t run again for the season. He’s back here and oozes class. I am going to back him like its 2009 and is my NAP of the night.

16:50 Roman Rosso (E/W)

To be very truthful I found it hard to decided between Capezzano and Roman Rosso as the bet here but Paddy Power is paying an extra place here and the last time I bet him finished 4th! I think the trip of a mile may be more to his suiting at Meydan given his run style and his 2 runs in last years shortened carnival were pregnant with promise and, at a tasty each way price, I think its fair compensation in a race where most of the field have different questions to answer.

18:00 Lazuli

Charlie Appleby does not go home from a Carnival meeting without a winner, I think it might be in the local rulebook, but if he gets to this point in the card without a winner I don’t think he will be too worried. Lazuli held Equilateral on their last run in the UK. Sprinters typically improve from 3 to 4 and, apart from Ekhiyaar, I couldn’t give any other runner a chance to get near the main two in the market. I think this is another selection that can be confidently bet in the winning distance market.
