12.55pm – Midnight Glance

This opening novices’ handicap hurdle is a contest which features very few in-form runners and it’s probably a race that can be narrowed down to the three recent winners in line-up. It’s potentially a good day on the cards for Brian Hughes and he teams up with Sawpit Sienna, who was a C&D winner here last year and gets weight all round.

It’s possible that Hughes’ mount might come out on top but the safest option is MIDNIGHT GLANCE, which represents a red-hot Alan King. A two-time winner at Plumpton late last year, the six-year probably found the extra trip too much when outstayed at Fontwell last month and he’s still on the same mark of 103. King’s horses are running as well as they have at any stage of the season and with Tom Cannon on board, who has a 33 per cent strike rate for the trainer in January, Midnight Glance gets the vote.

1.25pm – Dubai Angel

Probably the most competitive race on the card and while most eyes will be drawn towards Dundrum Wood on the back of his most recent win, Ollie Murphy’s charge is by no way consistent enough to trust. And he looks like a favourite worth taking on given that he often disappoints when not getting his own way up front.

Dr Richard Newland and Sam Twiston-Davies have built up a renowned partnership over the last number of seasons and it might be significant that the seven-time Cheltenham festival jockey takes the ride on DUBAI ANGEL for the first time. While finishing a well-beaten fourth on his first start for his new trainer at Newcastle in December, his first outing for 11 months, there was plenty to like about that effort where he raced keenly and wasn’t helped by a mistake at the second last fence. Stepping back in trip today, he should have everything in his favour and looks to have an outstanding chance of success.

2.55pm – Cup Of Coffee (NAP)

If you’ve backed CUP OF COFFEE in either of her two starts this season, then you’ve probably had her in your horse tracker ever since. So when you saw her declared for this mares maiden hurdle, nobody could blame you for getting someway excited given the unfortunate circumstances of her last two runs.

At Hereford in October, when she was sent off a 100/1 shot, she showed plenty of greenness but was in the process of running a major race when clipping heels over one furlong out and coming to grief. It’s safe to say she would have gone close that day and the winner Dobryn has since won a maiden hurdle. Then three weeks ago at Catterick, when sent off a 28/1 shot, she was again outrunning her odds when looking the most likely winner before falling at the second last under Brian Hughes.

The champion jockey is again on board today, which is a huge plus, and while Ahorsewithnoname is obviously the one to beat on the back of her fine runner-up effort in a Listed mares novice hurdle at Newbury, Cup Of Coffee might just have her measure.

3.25pm – Away For Slates

It’s not often that you can discount most of the field in a small runner handicap chase but on recent form, amongst other reasons, that appears to be the case here. Top weight is Billy’s Angel but he’s disappointed on his three starts since moving to the UK while it’s worth noting that Adam Wedge has his first ride since winning the Welsh National on Sabbathical but he has yet to win over fences. Saying that, the step back to two miles should help.

However, the most likely winner is the 11-year-old AWAY FOR SLATES, another which will benefit from the step back in trip. Milton Harris’ charge ran well for a long time at Warwick on New Years’ Eve over 2m4f, before fading badly, and the return to two miles will be right up his street. On overall form, he looks very hard to beat.
