Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin could be set to follow up in the world’s greatest steeplechase, but what price is he in Paddy Power’s Grand National betting market?
Gavin Cromwell’s stable star was the favourite for the Aintree feature before denying Galopin Des Champs a hat-trick in the Blue Riband event at the Cheltenham Festival and his position at the head of the market has since, unsurprisingly, strengthened.
Inothewayurthinkin has been allotted a mark of 160 by the British handicapper for the Grand National – 7lbs inferior to last year’s winner and top weight I Am Maximus – and that looks generous based on his Cheltenham heroics.
It is 91 years since Golden Miller became the only horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Aintree Grand National in the same season, but it remains to be seen whether he will be turned around in a little over three weeks to try and emulate the feat.
Speaking about Aintree after Inothewayurthinkin’s Cheltenham victory, owner JP McManus said: “The Gold Cup is a tough race and I have to look at what would be fair to the horse. I’ll see what Gavin says, but don’t expect a decision in the next week.”
Cromwell added: “I suppose you can’t rule it out but we’ll enjoy today. I suppose it’s a conversation that we’ll have with JP and Frank [Berry, McManus’s racing manager].” I suppose you can’t rule it out but we’ll enjoy today.”
Irish Grand National winner Intense Raffles is second in the market after a fantastic performance in the Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse when giving 3lbs to Thyestes winner Nick Rockett and finishing less than a length behind.
Aintree has been the long-term plan for Iroko and the seven-year-old, who also carries the famous green-and-gold colours of the McManus operation, is third in our betting.
Ownermate I Am Maximus is priced as the fourth favourite to land back-to-back renewals of the Grand National after scoring a comfortable victory in last year’s edition.
The Grand National continues to elude Cromwell, who saddled Vanillier to second place in 2023, but the hat-trick seeking Perceval Legallois and Cross Country Chase winner Stumptown are also prominent in the market.
