Willie Mullins’ Melbourne Cup runners have been given a decent draw for Tuesday’s big race at Flemington.
Vauban, who carries top weight of 8st 10lbs, will break from stall 11 in his bid to make amends for last year’s flop and Absurde, seventh in this 12 months ago, starts from stall seven.
They are gates that have produced winners in the previous 20 renewals of the Melbourne Cup and victory for either would represent a major highlight in Closutton maestro’s Mullins’ incredible training career.
Britain’s two hopes have also been handed nice draws as Northumberland Plate winner Onesmoothoperator is next door to Vauban in stall 12 and Sea King, who scored in the Group 3 Bendigo Cup on stable debut for Harry Eustace last week, goes from stall one.
The Aussies’ leading hope, Buckaroo, who you probably remember from his days with Joseph O’Brien, has to overcome a wide draw from 21, but that stall number has produced two winners in the last 20 years.
