We reach the penultimate programme with Episode 5 in the Champions Full Gallop series on Sunday, as the thrilling fly-on-the-wall documentary goes behind the scenes for most famous race in the world, the Aintree Grand National.

The million-pound prize pot draws a field of 34 riders and horses prepared to put their bodies on the line for a shot at jump racing glory. Last year’s winner Corach Rambler faces off against contenders from the Nicholls, Mullins and Skelton camps while Rachel Blackmore looks for her second win in the races as she takes the mount on Minella Indo.

How did it all work out? Tune into Virgin Media 1 on Sunday at 6pm to see all the drama unfold at the Liverpool track.

The six-part series encompasses everything that makes racing such a compelling sport, from helmet-mounted cameras that provide the visceral experience of the risk each jockey takes when flying over the jumps, to the charismatic owners – salt-of-the-earth syndicates to landed gentry and even royalty – trainers and stable staff who invest so much time and energy in the welfare of their horses.

Following the dramatic highs and lows of the jockey and trainers championships, the series will take viewers on a journey into racing, providing a unique insight into the sport, its stories and its characters from parade ring to the winning post.

Supported by Flutter and Racecourse Media Group (RMG) has access all areas from weighing rooms to stable yards as cameras follow the dramatic high octane thrills, emotion and drama both on and off the racetrack.

Champions: Full Gallop gives you a back-stage pass to the lives of jockeys and trainers at some of the best Jumps fixtures, including the iconic Cheltenham Festival and world famous Grand National – some of the most dramatic sporting events on earth. Millions of people will be watching, millions of pounds will be bet and millions more will be up for grabs in prize money.

Among other racing figures, the series will feature exclusive access to Harry Cobden and Sean Bowen in the fight for the UK Champion Jumps Jockeys’ title as well as Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls as they vie for the UK Champion Trainers’ title.

Helmet-mounted cameras provide the visceral experience of the risk each jockey faces in a race.
