Paddy Power saddles up for Pat Smullen Curragh Cancer Trials days on Saturday

More than €600,000 raised for cancer research in Ireland with charity cycle and Curragh sponsorship.

The biggest charity race day in the Irish racing calendar takes place at the Curragh this Saturday with the Pat Smullen Race Day in aid of Cancer Trials Ireland.

Named in honour of former Irish Flat champion jockey Pat Smullen who died of pancreatic cancer in 2021, Paddy Power will sponsor the Curragh to Curragh charity cycle as well as the richest race on the card – the Cambridgeshire Handicap (4.35pm).

Since it’s inception in 2022, more than €600,000 has gone directly into aiding pancreatic cancer research trials in Ireland and supported the creation of the Pat Smullen Chair in Pancreatic Cancer at University College Dublin (UCD). This new position anchors the expertise in pancreatic research in the State with the ambition of creating a global centre of excellence for treatment and research into of this cancer, which currently has low recovery rates.

General Admission on the day is €15 or there’s a Pat Smullen Raceday Bar-B-Q for €50 that includes admission to the track, the Oaks restaurant, BBQ voucher and entertainment including a D.J. racing preview and interviews with racing personalities. And €5 of every entry fee will be donated to Cancer Trials Ireland.

A variety of fund-raising activities will take place on the day including the Paddy Power sponsored Curragh to Curragh charity cycle race in memory of Olive Lynch, which starts from the racecourse at 10am.

Saturday also feature a variety of lively bars and food outlets, live music and Kids Zone with free activities for younger racegoers. The first of eight races comes under orders at 1.45pm and the curtain comes down on the day’s event at 5.45pm with the Pat Smullen Charity Race.

Up to 20 riders will line up in the finale over the famous Irish Derby course of 1m 4f, in memory of a family member or friend who they lost to cancer or to support anyone currently living with cancer.

The featured race on the card – the Irish Cambridgeshire (4.35pm) sees last year’s winner Coeur D’Or among those declared  for the €100,000 contest, while State Actor, Blues Emperor and Sea Eagle are among the other contenders.
