It is all about the team game at Ascot on Saturday as the Shergar Cup returns for another year.
An international cast of jockeys will battle it out in competitive handicaps at the famous Berkshire track and the unique event provides a bridge between Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Festival at York as we gallop into the second half of the Flat season.
The Ladies claimed the spoils in last year’s edition of the Shergar Cup as Hollie Doyle took the honours as the top jockey. Who will emerge victorious this time?
The latest Ascot odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise everything you need to know about the Shergar Cup 2024 is below.
Shergar Cup format
The Shergar Cup is a team event where jockeys compete in teams based on geography and gender. The 12 riders are split into four teams – Europe, Great Britain & Ireland, Ladies and the Rest of the World.
Every jockey will have five rides across the six races – subject to late non-runners – and points are dished out to the first five home in each renewal.
First: 15 points
Second: 10 points
Third: 7 points
Fourth: 5 points
Fifth: 3 points
If there is a non-runner and it is too late for a reserve to fill the empty spot then the team and jockey missing out will be awarded four points.
The team with the most points after six races will win the Shergar Cup, while the jockey with the most points will bag a cash bonus and take home the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle trophy.
A record prize fund worth £500,000 is up for grabs and there will be a £25,000 pot to be split between the top three stables on the afternoon.
