Cheltenham Festival day 2 statistics and trends for Wednesday’s races

Run the numbers!

There are just six races on Wednesday at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival as the Cross Country track has been deemed unsuitable for racing.

The cancellation of the fifth race on the card means the likes of Delta Work and Minella Indo do not get the chance to strut their stuff and the times of the remaining contests have been altered to avoid a big gap in the schedule.

Racegoers are also denied the opportunity to witness the third round in the El Fabiolo and Jonbon rivalry after the latter was declared a non-runner in the Champion Chase, the feature race. They will, therefore, have to hope hype horses Ballyburn and Fact To File can live up to the billing in the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle and Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase respectively.

There is further Grade 1 action courtesy of the Champion Bumper as well as Premier Handicaps in the form of Coral Cup, featuring last year’s winner Langer Dan, and Grand Annual.

If you’re planning to have a punt on the Cheltenham Festival then it might be worth taking a look through the history books at the trends and statistics built up over the years as that data will (hopefully) help you find a winner.

Strapped for time? Don’t worry, we’ve picked out some choice cuts for all seven races on Wednesday, March 13. Cheltenham Festival odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise the key stats are below.

Cheltenham Festival trends

Cheltenham 1:30

Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1)

You can strike a line through plenty of runners as the last 12 winners of the intermediate novice hurdle have been rated 146 or higher.

Cheltenham 2:10

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)

The favourite has finished in the top three in the last nine renewals of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, with five of those justifying their place at the top of the market.

Cheltenham 2:50

Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap)

The top weight has not won the Coral Cup in the last 10 years while seven winners in that period were rated 141 or higher.

Cheltenham 3:30

Queen Mother Champion Chase (Grade 1)

While five winners of the last 10 renewals of the Champion Chase won on their previous outing, only two horses in that period continued an unbeaten streak for the season at Cheltenham which could be a worry for El Fabiolo backers.

Cheltenham 4:10

Cross Country Chase

Since being changed to a conditions race in 2016, the favourite has never finished outside the first three home and the winner has always come from the top three in the betting.

Cheltenham 4:50

Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)

A clear profile emerges of the horse you want to look for as the last 10 winners did not carry top weight, had previously won on a left-handed track and most recently run at least 30 days ago.

Cheltenham 5:30

Weatherbys Champion Bumper (Grade 1)

Horses rated 132 or higher are 7-16 in the last 15 years and four horses have achieved this figure in 2024 – Jalon D’oudairies, The Yellow Claw, You Oughta Know and Junta Marvel (when the 7lbs mares allowance is added).

Cheltenham Festival going

It is worth factoring the track conditions into your thinking before placing a bet with Paddy Power for the Cheltenham Festival. The latest report conducted at Cheltenham on Wednesday, March 13 has the official going on the Old Course as SOFT, HEAVY (IN PLACES).
