Galopin Des Champs next race: When is Cheltenham Gold Cup winner back on track?

Will Galopin be galloping to glory once again?

Paul Townend celebrates victory on Galopin Des Champs in the Cheltenham Gold Cup

Galopin Des Champs justified the hype by smashing his rivals in a high-quality renewal of the Cheltenham Gold Cup last season.

It was the crowning glory of a cracking first year in open company over fences for Willie Mullins’ stable star, with two more Grade 1s – the John Durkan Memorial Chase and Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup – also being captured.

Galopin Des Champs will bid to become the first horse since former Closutton resident Al Boum Photo to successfully defend the Cheltenham Gold Cup, although rivals old and new will be hoping to steal his crown – and he has already suffered one defeat this term after losing to Punchestown foe Fastorslow in the John Durkan.

After getting the better of Fastorslow in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup, Galopin Des Champs is set to return to the track to defend his Cheltenham Gold Cup crown on Friday, March 15.

Willie Mullins said: “Galopin des Champs has come out of his last race very well and I am very happy.

“It’s going to be a tip-top Gold Cup I think and we are in great form.”

The Punchestown Gold Cup on Wednesday, May 1 could be Galopin Des Champs’ final port of the call for the season.
