Galopin Des Champs cemented his place in the pantheon of greats by successfully defending the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.
It is the crowning glory of a cracking second year in open company over fences for Willie Mullins’ stable star, with two more Grade 1s – the Savills Chase and Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup – also being captured.
Galopin Des Champs is set to tackle one more race in the 2023/24 campaign before trotting off on his summer holidays and eventually turning his attention to becoming a three-time winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Galopin Des Champs next race
After successfully defending his Cheltenham Festival crown, the Punchestown Gold Cup on Wednesday, May 1 will be Galopin Des Champs’ final port of the call for the season.
Willie Mullins told Sporting Life: “It’s going to be tough for him (Galopin Des Champs) in the Punchestown Gold Cup. He got beaten there last year, but I think the two – the Paul Nicholls horse and himself – went at it very early and the other horse (Fastorslow) came and robbed them. Paul (Townend) might just use different tactics, and the horse seems good.
“Galopin Des Champs turns up every day and runs a race and has had many runs this season. I’ve seen horses that are hardy, willing and turn up end up being very good horses because the good ones sometimes get injured and are not able to turn up every day – we’ve seen that this hugely year, with one horse in particular (Constitution Hill).”
