Corach Rambler next race: What is Grand National winner’s next assignment?

Can the Rambler land a blow in the Gold Cup?

Corach Rambler wins the Grand National

Corach Rambler stamped his name into the history books by landing the Grand National at Aintree in 2023.

Victory in the world’s greatest steeplechase came hot on the hooves of successfully defending his Ultima Handicap Chase crown at the Cheltenham Festival and took his record over fences to five wins from 10 starts.

Connections are hoping Corach Rambler can step out of handicaps and into Graded company, with a crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup being the ultimate target.

A bitterly disappointing fifth-place finish in the Edinburgh Gin Chase on seasonal reappearance suggested that looks ambitious, although a much better run in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase suggested staying power could see him pick up the pieces at the top level.

Corach Rambler next race

Corach Rambler will next be seen on track in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Friday, March 15.

Trainer Lucinda Russell said: “Corach Rambler is in flying form and seems very well in himself. He’ll go straight to the Gold Cup and we’ll look to get a racecourse gallop into him before that like we did last year.

“Everyone knows how much I love him and it would be very special if he could be competitive in another Grand National.

“Over Christmas we watched back the race last year and it was amazing how much he loved it and how well he jumped. That is the main target and, while I don’t like to call the Gold Cup a prep, that’s sort of what we’re treating it as.

“He’ll have to carry so much weight in the Ultima and we just feel the Gold Cup will be a better race for him. It would be amazing if he could run well in that which would set him up perfectly for Aintree.”

After the Gold Cup, Corach Rambler will take his place in the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, April 13.

The defending champion has been given a rating of 159 – 13lbs higher than 12 months ago – and will have to lug at least 11st 2lbs over the marathon trip.
