Cheltenham will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Gold Cup at next year’s meeting – and it looks set to be a humdinger of a renewal.
Willie Mullins’ stable star Galopin Des Champs is the defending champion after a titanic battle with King George winner Bravemansgame in last season’s race, although some new rivals could be bidding to steal his crown.
Fastorslow, second in the Ultima at the most recent Cheltenham Festival, will be trained for the big one after getting the better of Galopin Des Champs in the Punchestown Gold Cup and John Durkan on seasonal reappearance in November.
A second challenger from Ireland is also emerging in the form of Gerri Colombe, who looks primed for the stamina-sapping trip after powering through the line to claim the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, although a bounce back will be needed after an emphatic defeat to Galopin Des Champs in the Savills Chase last month.
The Gold Cup is the biggest contest of the week at the Cheltenham Festival 2024 and Jumps racing’s most prestigious event is run over an extended 3m2f on the tricky New Course.

Galopin Des Champs is the favourite with Paddy Power for the Gold Cup after storming to victory in last season’s renewal. Defeats to Fastorslow in the Punchestown Gold Cup and John Durkan raised concerns, although a runaway success in the Savills Chase and Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup has solidified the defending champion’s place at the head of proceedings.
The Martin Brassil-trained Fastorslow is next in our betting after beating Galopin Des Champs in the Punchestown Gold Cup and John Durkan, although defeat in the Irish Gold Cup suggests he is vulnerable to the favourite.
