Big season incoming?

Bravemansgame emerged as Britain’s leading staying chaser in the 2022/23 National Hunt season.

Paul Nicholls’ stable star romped to glory in the prestigious King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day before coming off second best after a brilliant battle with Galopin Des Champs in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Defending the King George crown and a second crack at the Gold Cup are the top targets for Bravemansgame in the new campaign, with fresh faces and familiar foes set to be in opposition.

The eight-year-old made his seasonal reappearance in the Charlie Hall Chase but a last-fence blunder saw him lose out to Gentlemansgame before an underwhelming crack at the Betfair Chase.

There were signs of a revival in the King George, however, as Bravemansgame put up a stern defence of his title by finishing second behind Irish raider Hewick.

After placing second in the King George VI Chase, Paul Nicholls is considering a tilt at the Denman Chase at Newbury on Saturday, February 10.

The Ditcheat handler told our pals at Betfair: “Bravemansgame has come out of the King George on Boxing Day very well. He showed signs in that race that he is coming back to his best.

“He was going to go straight to Cheltenham… [But] I just thought, why not change tacks a little and, rather than be too hard on him at home, keep him nice and fresh and have a look at the Betfair Denman Chase. It is a possibility for him if we want to do something slightly different.”

After that, it will be all-systems go for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Friday, March 15.
