Willie Mullins will be hoping a two-year plan comes to fruition when Vauban bids to justify favouritism in the Melbourne Cup.

After landing the 2022 Triumph Hurdle and spending a season chasing home Constitution Hill and State Man, the dual-purpose performer came of age on the level over the summer and has made the long trip Down Under for one of the world’s richest races.

The Melbourne Cup is a pretty big deal in Australia as locals brand it ‘the race that stops the nation’ and Vauban is joined in the line up by stablemate and Ebor winner Absurde.

There is further Irish interest in the lucrative contest as Joseph O’Brien saddles Royal Ascot winner Okita Soushi.

Australian-trained Gold Trip came out on top in last year’s renewal, which boasted an $8,000,000 prize pot, and the six-year-old is in contention to defend his crown, despite failing to land a blow on Without A Fight and West Wind Blows in the Caulfield Cup last month.

You can run the rule over our Melbourne Cup odds on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise all the key details about this year’s renewal can be found below.

Melbourne Cup 2023 date and start time

The Melbourne Cup is set to take place at Flemington on Tuesday, November 7. The post time is set for 04:00. You can watch the race live on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app.

Grade 1-winning hurdler Vauban is the favourite with Paddy Power for the Melbourne Cup after taking his Flat form to new heights by landing the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes in August.

Despite failing to fire in last year’s renewal, Without A Fight is next in our betting following victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup last month.

Gold Trip is also prominent in the market as last year’s Melbourne Cup hero bids to join the exclusive club of dual winners.
