Cheltenham Festival Day 1 Races

SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 13:30 Last Year’s Winner: Constitution Hill

The first race of the Cheltenham Festival boasts an illustrious roll call of winners and Willie Mullins’ Facile Vega could bid to join the honours list. A fast-and-furious affair should kick the meeting off in fine style!

ARKLE CHASE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 14:10 Last Year’s Winner: Edwardstone

The leading minimum-distance novices tackle the larger obstacles in the second race of the meeting as racegoers are treated to back-to-back Grade 1s. Can Jonbon add his name to the honours board? Paddy’s certainly hoping so having already paid out…

ULTIMA HANDICAP CHASE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 14:50 Last Year’s Winner: Corach Rambler

The first handicap of the meeting is one for the stayers and this can sometimes be a springboard to the Grand National as last year’s Aintree hero, Noble Yeats, finished a lowly ninth in this.

CHAMPION HURDLE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 15:30 Last Year’s Winner: Honeysuckle

The opening day’s Championship race is set to see last year’s Supreme scorer, Constitution Hill, face the Irish champion hurdler, State Man, in a blockbuster clash.

MARES’ HURDLE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 16:10 Last Year’s Winner: Marie’s Rock

A chance for the girls to take centre stage and this year’s renewal is shaping up to be a cracker as Honeysuckle is set for her last dance against the likes of Brandy Love, Echoes In Rain, Epatante and Love Envoi.

BOODLES JUVENILE HANDICAP HURDLE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 16:50 Last Year’s Winner: Brazil

The four-year-olds that fall short of the quality required to win the Triumph will take part in this, however, it’s one of the big betting races of the week with plenty of horses set to take their chance.

NATIONAL HUNT CHASE

Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 17:30 Last Year’s Winner: Stattler

The second longest race in distance of the meeting rounds off the first afternoon of action at Prestbury Park and it is also reserved for amateur riders. A certain Tiger Roll won this in 2017 – the year before the first of his Grand National victories.

Cheltenham Festival Day 2 Races

BALLYMORE NOVICES’ HURDLE

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 13:30 Last Year’s Winner: Sir Gerhard

A spin over the intermediate distance kicks off the second day of action and this could contain a future Champion Hurdle winner as the likes of Istabraq, Hardy Eustace and Faugheen have scored over the years.

BROWN ADVISORY NOVICES’ CHASE

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 14:10 Last Year’s Winner: L’Homme Presse

A future Gold Cup winner could be lurking in the field and this year’s renewal looks like being a wide-open affair. The home team have dominated the race in recent years and will, no doubt, be hunting another success.

CORAL CUP

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 14:50 Last Year’s Winner: Commander Of Fleet

The first handicap of the second afternoon usually attracts plenty of runners so get your each-way fancies in line for this one!

CHAMPION CHASE

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 15:30 Last Year’s Winner: Energumene

The feature race on Festival Wednesday is set to see Energumene attempt to defend his crown from last season’s Arkle hero Edwardstone.

CROSS COUNTRY CHASE

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 16:10 Last Year’s Winner: Delta Work

One of the least-celebrated races on the schedule but last year’s renewal was a corker as Delta Work beat stablemate and retiring dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll in a sprint to the line. He was booed by the crowd but looks a solid fancy to make it back-to-back victories, although classy stablemate Galvin holds an entry.

GRAND ANNUAL HANDICAP CHASE

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 16:50 Last Year’s Winner: Global Citizen

The second handicap of the afternoon takes place over the minimum distance and each-way players will be busy studying the racecard for a value pick.

CHAMPION BUMPER

Date: Wednesday, March 15 Time: 17:30 Last Year’s Winner: Facile Vega

Facile Vega stormed to victory in an absolute bog 12 months ago for Willie Mullins and the Closutton handler will, no doubt, fire a number of darts at the afternoon’s final contest once again.

Cheltenham Festival Day 3 Races

TURNERS NOVICES’ CHASE

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 13:30 Last Year’s Winner: Bob Olinger

A novice chase over the intermediate distance opens the action on the third day of action and Willie Mullins is likely to hold the aces in this race.

PERTEMPS FINAL HANDICAP HURDLE

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 14:10 Last Year’s Winner: Third Wind

A fiercely-competitive handicap over a staying trip ramps up the action but fewer horses could miss out on a chance to run as the first four – instead of the first six – from qualifiers are eligible to run in this season’s final.

RYANAIR CHASE

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 14:50 Last Year’s Winner: Allaho

A setback means Allaho is unable to go for the hat-trick but dual Cheltenham Festival winner Shishkin looks set to fill the void after romping to glory in last month’s Ascot Chase.

PADDY POWER STAYERS’ HURDLE

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 15:30 Last Year’s Winner: Flooring Porter

We’re once again sponsoring the feature on St Patrick’s Thursday but Flooring Porter’s hat-trick bid has been hampered by a training setback and fresh rivals including Blazing Khal and Teahupoo could take their chance.

PLATE HANDICAP CHASE

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 16:10 Last Year’s Winner: Coole Cody

A meeting at Cheltenham wouldn’t be complete without a big-field handicap over the intermediate trip and punters should be familiar with most of the runners by the time the final field is declared.

MARES’ NOVICES’ HURDLE

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 16:50 Last Year’s Winner: Love Envoi

A competitive renewal looks to be on the cards as British hopeful Luccia and Irish challenger Ashroe Diamond could do battle in the afternoon’s penultimate race.

KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP

Date: Thursday, March 16 Time: 17:30 Last Year’s Winner: Chambard

A race for amateur jockeys over a marathon trip of 3m2f, the winner’s list includes Grand National winner Ballabriggs in 2010.

Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Races

TRIUMPH HURDLE

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 13:30 Last Year’s Winner: Vauban

The premiere race on the calendar for juveniles kicks off the stonking card on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival. It should be a cracker if the likes of Blood Destiny, Comfort Zone, Lossiemouth and Scriptwriter take their chance.

COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 14:10 Last Year’s Winner: State Man

State Man made a mockery of his handicap mark to land the County Hurdle so it’s worth studying the form and weight in what is likely to be a big-field contest.

ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICES’ HURDLE

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 14:50 Last Year’s Winner: The Nice Guy

One of the races to be added to the scheduled when the Cheltenham Festival added a fourth day, it is the longest in distance of the novice hurdle contests and was won by a certain Minella Indo in 2019.

GOLD CUP

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 15:30 Last Year’s Winner: A Plus Tard

The biggest race of the four-day meeting. The Gold Cup is the Blue Riband on the National Hunt calendar and the one they all want to win. A Plus Tard is set to defend his crown but Galopin Des Champs is the hot favourite to land the renewal for Willie Mullins.

ST JAMES’S PLACE FESTIVAL HUNTERS’ CHASE

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 16:10 Last Year’s Winner: Billaway

A chance for the amateur jockeys to ride over the Gold Cup course and distance as the hunter chasers tackle a whopping 22 fences. Patrick Mullins rode his first winner in the race as Billaway turned on the turbo chargers to nick it from Winged Leader 12 months ago.

MRS PADDY POWER MARES’ CHASE

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 16:50 Last Year’s Winner: Elimay

Here come the girls! A tasty meeting between Impervious and Allegorie De Vassy is in the pipeline for the third running of the race.

MARTIN PIPE HANDICAP HURDLE

Date: Friday, March 17 Time: 17:30 Last Year’s Winner: Banbridge

The curtain comes down on the Cheltenham Festival 2023 with a big-field handicap. Willie Mullins has saddled a record four winners in this race for conditional jockeys including Galopin Des Champs in 2021.
