The American Grand National has become a happy hunting ground for the British and Irish – and this year’s renewal looks set to continue that trend.

Galway Plate hero Hewick is set to cross the pond for the Grade 1 as Shark Hanlon prepares his charge for a crack at the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup while Global Citizen, a winner at last season’s Cheltenham Festival, is also expected to make the transatlantic trip.

A $250,000 prize pot makes it the richest Jumps contest in the United States but don’t be fooled by the name as the American Grand National has little in common with the Aintree and Irish equivalent.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Not only is the race run over hurdles instead of fences, by clocking in at a distance of 2m5f it can be hardly considered a marathon trip.

Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: “It’s magnificent to see one of the great characters of the game ‘Shark’ Hanlon have a tilt at the American National. The Carlow conjuror is not going Stateside with a back number either as Hewick is a Galway Plate hero who may well have won the Kerry National but for an uncharacteristic mistake at the last and connections have Cheltenham Gold Cup dreams.”

Hewick is the red-hot favourite to claim the top prize as Shark Hanlon’s progressive gelding bids to score a fifth career win over fences.

Jack Fisher’s Snap Decision represents the home team and is bidding to land a third Grade 1 in this calendar year after successes in the Calvin Houghland Iroquois and Jonathan Sheppard.

Grand Annual winner Global Citizen is also prominent in our early market with trainer Ben Pauling setting out this race as a big target.
