Adayar is set to face Baaeed in the Champion Stakes at Ascot after connections opted against a second crack at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The 2021 Epsom Derby winner was prominent in Paddy’s betting for the Arc after an eye-catching seasonal reappearance at Doncaster earlier this month, but ground conditions have influenced the thinking to swerve the richest race in Europe.

The going at Longchamp is described as a mixture of good to soft and soft after the heavens opened, and more rainfall is expected before Sunday’s contest.

A statement from owner-breeders Godolphin read: “Following discussions yesterday, it has been decided that Adayar will miss the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and will instead head to the Champion Stakes where conditions are likely to suit him better.”

Adayar placed fourth in last year’s renewal of the Arc – run on heavy ground – before rounding off his three-year-old campaign in disappointing fashion when finishing fifth of nine in the Champion Stakes.

The Frankel colt is set to run into Baaeed at Ascot as the unbeaten superstar takes to the track for the final time in his career. You can find the latest antepost odds for the Champion Stakes on the Paddy Power website.

Sealiway, the winner of last year’s Champion Stakes, could also opt to join the party at Ascot but was among the 24 remaining entries for the Arc after Tuesday’s latest forfeit stage.

Mac Swiney and Thunder Kiss joined Adayar in being scratched from the Arc. Verry Elleegant is expected to be supplemented at a cost of €120,000 but connections face an anxious waiting after racing bigwigs decided against increasing the field size from its current maximum of 20 runners.

A statement said: “France Galop has been asked several times about the maximum number of runners that will go to the start for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday. The 2022 racing code and the specific race conditions limited the number of runners to 20 and this is the number that will be retained.

“If need be, elimination or balloting procedures are as follows: runners with the lowest rating will be eliminated sequentially. The rating is decided by the France Galop handicappers.

“In the case of horses with the same rating, eliminations will be made in the ascending order of prize-money won for victories and places throughout the year 2022, with a draw in the case of a tie in prize-money earnings.”
