Stradivarius fans will notice there is a different jockey onboard the superstar stayer in the Goodwood Cup.

Frankie Dettori has piloted Stradivarius to 15 of his 20 career wins, including three Gold Cup triumphs and two Goodwood Cup successes, but the Italian won’t be in the saddle in Tuesday’s 3.35pm at Goodwood.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Cracks began to emerge in the partnership after owner Bjorn Nielsen and joint trainer John Gosden publicly blasted Dettori’s ride when placing third in last month’s Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Dettori had a brief sabbatical from the Gosden yard but he has not reunited with Stradivarius, with Nielsen booking Andrea Atzeni for his star horse’s crack at a record-extending fifth Goodwood Cup.

Nielsen said: “Frankie Dettori, who has enjoyed a great relationship with Stradivarius and ridden him to many brilliant stakes victories – more than he has any other horse – will by mutual agreement give up the ride to Andrea Atzeni in the Goodwood Cup.

“Frankie remains not only ‘the Strad’s’ biggest fan, but a very good friend and, of course, I look forward to seeing him continue his phenomenal career as one of the greatest big-race jockeys of all time.”

Atzeni is three from three on Stradivarius, including back-to-back Goodwood Cup wins in 2017 and 2018, so Nielsen is confident the jockey change won’t be a problem.

“Andrea will be no stranger to Stradivarius as they are undefeated together, winning the 2017 and 2018 Goodwood Cups as well as the 2017 Queen’s Vase,” he said.

It all means we may have seen Dettori onboard Stradivarius for the final time as the son of Sea The Stars could be retired after Tuesday’s race.
