Paddy Power’s Royal Ascot Rewind: Joseph O’Brien opens up on his greatest rides

Joseph faced and rode some mighty mounts at the royal meet.

Paddy’s crack production team have piled into Ruby Walsh’s lavish cinema room in the west wing of his sprawling mansion once more to go over the glory days of another great jockey.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

This time it’s Joseph O’Brien getting a grilling from Paddy and Ruby as we take another stroll down memory lane to look at his most notable rides at Royal Ascot.

From facing Frankel on Excelebration to So You Think’s success the lads covered a lot of ground in our feature-length 40 minute video which you can watch on the embedded widget below or on Paddy’s YouTube Channel.

As well as running the rule over the rides, Paddy and Ruby dug a litter deeper into the training process, what he would change if he had the chance and what it was like riding for his father, the legendary trainer Aidan O’Brien.

“Did I ever feel pressure being my father’s son?” Joseph reflects, “I think you just get over it. I think I did when I was younger but I knew from when I started riding that I was in a very privileged position to be where I was.

“I know that by being there that I was going to meet people saying I was only riding all the horses because of my position.

They were probably right to be fair!

“I was lucky enough to be in that position to ride the horses and it was just something I had to deal with. I knew how privileged I was.”

Joseph came up against the mighty Frankel at the 2012 Royal Ascot meeting on Excelebration so he got to see Henry Cecil’s undefeated champion up close.

And as a 19-year old it was a race that lived long in the memory, despite the disappointing result for him personally.

“Frankel, I don’t think we’ll ever see one like him again,” He continued. “We did many different things to try and beat him.

“Excelebration was unlucky to bump into him. Any jockey would have loved to ride him. He’s the dream horse to ride.

“He was just one of those horses who was so far better than his competition that all you had to do was not fall off!”
