Newmarket plays host to the first Classic of the Flat season, but who is the favourite to win the 2000 Guineas?
Battleground went into last year’s renewal at the head of the betting but Aidan O’Brien’s colt could only finish 13th of 14, while other fancied horses including Thunder Moon and Wembley disappointed.
It was Poetic Flare who came out on top at a starting price of 16/1 and the race proved a decent pointer for the rest of the season as the son of Dawn Approach enjoyed a cracking campaign, with success at Royal Ascot and a trio of second places at Group 1 level.
We’ve had a look at Paddy Power’s latest antepost odds for Saturday’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and picked out the four horses at the top of the market.
Native Trail
The leading two-year-old in 2021 kicked off his Classic campaign in fine style when landing the Craven Stakes over the 2000 Guineas course and distance earlier this month. Charlie Appleby’s top jockey William Buick has opted to ride.
Coroebus
James Doyle gets the booking for Appleby and Godolphin’s second string, who scored over course and distance when landing the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at the end of last season. He was given a day out over the Rowley Mile earlier this month.
Luxembourg
The Epsom Derby favourite appears to be the number one for Aidan O’Brien – the leading trainer in 2000 Guineas history – after racking up a hat-trick in his two-year-old campaign including the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster last time out.
Perfect Power
A climber in the market after winning the Greenham Stakes at Newmarket on seasonal reappearance for Richard Fahey. Christophe Soumillon was on board that day and gets the nod once again.
