After a hiatus due to COVID-19 causing last year’s Shergar Cup to be cancelled, the unique event is back with a bang at Ascot this Saturday.
4 teams. 12 jockeys. 6 handicap races. And a whole load of drama. The Shergar Cup has carved out a place on the Flat calendar, despite a lack of Pattern races.

Shergar Cup 2021 Teams and Jockeys
Due to the travel difficulties caused by coronavirus pandemic restrictions, there has been a slight change to the teams for this year’s competition. Great Britain and Ireland have been split in two, with Europe being gobbled up by the Rest of the World, while the Girls team has been rebranded as the Ladies.
Ladies: Hayley Turner, Mickaëlle Michel, Nicola Currie
Rest of the World: Sean Levey, Kevin Stott, Andrea Atzeni
Great Britain: Adam Kirby, Cieren Fallon, James Doyle
Ireland: Joe Fanning, David Egan, Tadhg O’Shea
The Ladies jockeys will wear cerise and black coloured silks, Great Britain will sport blue and black silks, the Ireland riders will wear green and black silks, and the Rest of the World trio will don yellow and black silks.
Shergar Cup 2021 Format
Quite simply, the team that earns the most points over six races wins the Shergar Cup. How do you get points? Well, a total of 10 horses will run in each race in the Shergar Cup, with the first five past the post bagging points for their team. Points make prizes – and it pays big to win a race with a cool 15 points on offer. The precious points are dished out as follows:
1st: 15 points
2nd: 10 points
3rd: 7 points
4th: 5 points
5th: 3 points
Each jockey will ride in five of the six races, with each team having two or three members competing in each race. It’s not all about the team game, however, with the jockey collecting the most individual points leaving Ascot with the Silver Saddle trophy.
