Desert Encounter

Smart gelding who has returned with a couple of respectable seconds this year but he’s out of his depth in Group 1 company.
Sangarius
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: C. T. Keane Age: 5
Has long since looked a classy type and, having landed a listed event at Lingfield in December, returned with a pleasing second of 4 in Huxley Stakes at Chester. Disappointing at Sandown subsequently.
Lord North
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age: 5
High-class gelding who won this last year and produced a big effort to land the Dubai Turf at Meydan 81 days ago. Likely to have been lined up for this, so boasts obvious claims.

Audarya
Trainer: James Fanshawe Jockey: William Buick Age: 5
Smart filly who was last seen landing the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Keenland 7 months ago. Might not have finished improving but race-fitness is a concern.
Love
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 4
Developed into a high-class filly last season, unbeaten in the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. 10-month absence an obvious concern but she has the most class in this field.
Armory
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Seamie Heffernan Age: 4
Third in Irish Champion last season and looked as good as ever when easily landing the Huxley Stakes at Chester on return. Big player with even more to come.
My Oberon
Trainer: William Haggas Jockey: Tom Marquand Age: 4
Took form to another level when winning Group 3 in good style at Newmarket on return and back to form when third in Group 1 at Lonchamp 17 days ago. Needs to improve if he’s to compete in this.
Timeform Verdict
ARMORY made an impressive return when landing the Huxley Stakes at Chester and, while he has a small amount to find with Love and Lord North at the weights, he has a fitness edge over that pair, so he gets the marginal vote in what should be a fascinating renewal. Audarya isn’t a forlorn hope, either.
