This looks an ideal opportunity for one of the shrewdest trainers in the country to bag his first 2yo winner of the season after this horse came 3rd two weeks ago at Naas and his other runner was a head 2nd at Cork on Wednesday. With the testing conditions likely to be unfavourable to many of the debutants here, and runners like The Acropolis having one eye on Royal Ascot, it doesn’t look to be as deep a Curragh maiden as you would expect. With a nice high draw and likely to be ridden positively, Pinar Del Rio can improve on that debut effort here before going on to bigger and better things.
This is a really trappy looking Listed race and with question marks over his rivals here in relation to the ground or being past their best I think Majestic Dawn holds a massive chance. The concern is he came on plenty for his first run of the season last year but that was to prepare him for the Cambridgeshire which he won easily, now he is being stepped up in grade you would like to think his trainers would have him pretty forward for a very winnable looking contest. The soft ground will be ideal & he should get an easy lead here and looks to have an excellent chance.
Van Gogh may have been a disappointing 8th in the Guineas at Newmarket but hear me out when I say that the heavy ground will be much more to his suiting. There are parallels here to Aidan O’Briens Irish Guineas winner Mastercraftsman who was also a group 1 winning 2yr old, ran unplaced in a firm ground guineas and now faces into a heavy ground Irish guineas. Out of all the Ballydoyle colts Van Gogh would be the one I like the most and would certainly be looking to bet him in a few of Paddys match Bet markets especially against the Ryan Moore ridden Wembley.
Quickly becoming a specialist in these big handicaps, Pendleton was mugged in no uncertain terms last time out at Ascot when going down a nose in a photo finish. While up 4lb he’s sure to come on for that run given it was his first since October. A winner of a similar race to this on his only start over 5 furlongs you can sleep well knowing the weather can do what it wants as he’ll be just as effective on any ground – something that can’t be said for many of his rivals.

Valhalla’s Dream showed plenty of ability on her first two starts, when 3rd in a Curragh maiden over seven furlongs on testing ground on debut and when 4th over six furlongs on decent ground on second start. Six furlongs on decent ground probably was a bit lively for her that day but she still shaped well and was pitched into listed company at the Curragh on her last start.
That proved a step too far at this stage for her and she was never truly in the race, as she was out the back of the field, while she had been ridden prominently on her first two starts. She now enters handicap company off a very tempting mark of 74 and she has proved that she can be effective on testing ground, so all looks in place for a decent run at a rewarding price.
The ground is going to be really testing at the Curragh and Colfer Kay is a previous winner no heavy ground at Naas last November. She showed more last time at Navan and is now down to a mark of 81 Which is 1lb lower than her last winning mark. She ticks plenty of boxes in what looks a very competitive race.
