No surprise if Minella Mojo and Beyond The Pale were each intent on dominating early, nor were both Presentandcounting and the hat-trick seeking Dog Of War held on to until the very last possible moment. Evidently less wedded to a specific tactic, and back on track at Doncaster last time in a race that has worked out well, SMITH’S BAY is preferred to all those named, with the Skelton gelding Dog Of War feared most.
Cushuish was nudged up only 2lb for last month’s C&D win against her own sex and is respected as she attempts to complete a hat-trick but front-running veteran MR MAFIA didn’t run anything like as badly as his eventual 44l defeat might suggest at Southwell last month and, with cheekpieces now refitted, he can capitalise upon some help from the handicapper. Well Smitten is next on the list.
Not much form to go on here, and the verdict goes to the newcomer from the stable with the best record in bumpers, Nicky Henderson’s THEATRE GLORY. Another 4yo filly, Celestial Gayle, whose dam was useful and won a bumper, is second choice, while Highoaks Chief and Blue Shark make some appeal on paper as well.
This doesn’t look the strongest of bumpers, and a repeat of the form of BATTLE MARCH’s fourth at Newton Abbot could be enough for him to get his head in front. Bolsover Bill was clearly thought capable of much better at Kelso in March, when sent off favourite, and he may prove the biggest danger with a tongue-strap applied. Tiger Orchid should be watched in the betting, while Moscow Spy appeals most of the newcomers.
Bashful Boy and El Borracho will both be respected if the ground doesn’t deteriorate, while Valentino Dancer and Blue Ribbon both look interesting on their stable debuts. However, it might be worth chancing RAVEN COURT, who had an excuse for his latest defeat and has been given a chance by the handicapper. Valentino Dancer is second choice.

Johnny B is a reliable option but NO FIXED CHARGES put some moderate point form behind him when runner-up on his hurdle debut at Plumpton and with his pedigree he could be a big improver over this trip. Presenting Jeremy is an intriguing candidate on his Irish point form and the market should give some clues as to what is expected.
Jumping issues temper greater confidence in Yauthym, while Diva’s Mix needs to channel her energies better. Let’s Get Real and Kahina Rules offer fair recent course bumper form, but the eye is particularly drawn to LEGENDARY GRACE, just a second Nick Gifford runner at Worcester in five seasons and out of a dam who was 5-9 here and 2-2 in C&D hurdles specifically. Jaunty Freyja has had excuses on both hurdles starts and is next most preferred.
Baily Gorse ran very well on last month’s stable debut at Chepstow and will probably come good for Tom Lacey soon but the most obvious answer is low-mileage 5yo AN TAILLIUR (nap), who won fairly comfortably at Market Rasen on Friday and still looks well handicapped under a penalty here. Espressino can also feature, while Clearly Capable is a more speculative option to consider.
