QUICK SUZY ran to a high level when second at Tipperary on debut 2 weeks ago and might be able to go one better at the first time of asking, despite the presence of some interesting newcomers – most notably Snapius and Theogony.
CADAMOSTO looked good when making a winning start to his career at Dundalk last month and, with the prospect of better to come from this well-bred colt, he should prove hard to beat. That said, Cheerupsleepyjean also created a good impression when accounting for 4 rivals – including the re-opposing Missing Matron – over course and distance recently. Meanwhile, Tipperary winner Elliptic is brimming with potential, too.
Aidan O’Brien has dominated this race over the years and BROOME, who defeated a couple of today’s rivals in the Alleged here last month, looks good to make it 3-3 for the campaign. This trip is on the short side for Twilight Payment, but he could still be the one to give the selection most to do.
QUEEN’S SPEECH looked potentially useful in making a winning debut in a course and distance maiden in November, scoring with any amount to spare. She’s open to significant progress moving forward and can come out on top – possibly at the chief expense of Champers Elysees who was one of the most improved horses in training last term. Elizabethan and No Speak Alexander complete the shortlist.
The 1m maiden MALAYSIAN landed at Cork in October has thrown up several subsequent winners (including one at Group 3 level) and she has been handed what looks a very fair mark for this handicap debut. Indeed, she is open to plenty of improvement and this drop to 7 furlongs looks a good move. Montego Bay and Russian River are also armed with potential now handicapping, particularly the former.
This looks competitive, but ACE AUSSIE took a big step forward on his exploits as a two-year-old when finishing in front of a number of today’s rivals in the 2000 Guineas Trial won by Poetic Flare 22 days ago and he’s fancied to go very close again with the prospect of more to come. Notre Belle Bete, Horoscope, Merchants Quay and Storm Legend head up the dangers.
OTTAWA FIRE was much improved when landing some hefty bets on his handicap debut starting out for Johnny Murtagh at Gowran, always in the firing line and coming clear. There is more to come, and he can follow up. The unexposed El Padre similarly has more to offer, and his experience of the hustle and bustle of big fields will stand him in good stead. Pretty Rebel is another to consider.
As difficult a ‘lucky last’ as you’ll find, with TEDDY BOY getting the verdict. He ran well in a similar contest over course and distance a fortnight ago and was successful the last time the cheekpieces (back on here) were applied. Celtic Manor has first-time headgear himself and could figure off a tempting mark. Trueba and Roxette are a couple of others to consider.
