Mon Frere was a fairly useful winner on the Flat for Sir Mark Prescott and was given a considerate ride on his hurdling/stable debut over two miles at this course last month. The two that finished in front of him had reached higher heights on the Flat, and have both run well since, so there is reason to be positive about the form. That was Mon Frere’s first run for 19 months, too, so he is sure to strip fitter for that outing, while the step up in trip (stayed two miles on the Flat) is sure to unlock further improvement. There is plenty to like about his chances for a yard that are flying.
Eventful was a fairly useful maiden on the Flat for Mick Quinn and hasn’t looked devoid of ability in three starts over hurdles so far. He shaped well in a good quality maiden run at an end-to-end gallop where the three market principals had it between them from some way out at Plumpton in January. Eventful wasn’t able to go with the principals from three out, but he’s a potential improver now handicapping while the return to better ground could also help. Based on his Flat form, his handicap mark looks fair enough and better is expected now.

A big-field handicap where several make some appeal, but it could be worth taking a chance on the Fergal O’Brien-trained Ask The Lady. She showed improved form upped to a similar trip as this when hitting the frame at Huntingdon last month while leaving the impression that run didn’t get to the bottom of her. She has since been dropped 2 lb in the weights and should have more to offer in handicaps, so she makes appeal in a wide-open event.
