13:00 Derab

John & Thady Gosden’s Derab is bound to be a popular as he chased home La Barrosa at Ascot on debut. He kept good company last season and was just chinned by stablemate Master of the Sea in the Group 3 Craven Stakes on Friday at HQ. Given natural improvement, Derab should take a world of beating in the opener.

13:35 Al Aasy

William Haggas’ charge produced his best performances to date at Newmarket and looked a serious St Leger contender towards the backend of last season when he fairly bolted up in good company. AL AASY‘s Bahrain Trophy win marked him down as a serious horse who could leave his mark at a higher level this season. This looks an ideal starting opportunity for him with the team in red-hot form and he will use this as a stepping stone to better things down the line.

14:10 Umm Kulthum

Richard Fahey’s filly has won two of her four lifetime starts and produced arguably her best performance in defeat last time at Newmarket, when third behind today’s rival Alcohol Free in the Chevely Park Stakes last September.

The yard have hit the ground running again this season and this winning-machine outfit have to be respected when they aim at the better races. UMM KULTHUM was really starting to motor towards the line when we last saw her at HQ and this test looks an ideal stepping stone to the 1,000 Guineas next month.

14:45 Chindit

CHINDT comes from the top Richard Hannon outfit who know all about winning both Classics at Newmarket. However, he disappointed when we last saw him in the Dewhurst Stakes when only ninth to St Mark’s Basilica, but that was his first try on soft ground and it clearly didn’t suit.

He’s reportedly working extremely well and showing lots of pace at home. Hopefully, he settles better in his races and gives himself every opportunity of getting the mile in the 2,000 Guineas, should he succeed on Sunday. A recent trainer profile saw Hannon him talk about him in glowing terms. We should all take that hint for Sunday’s 7-furlong contest.

15:20 Matthew Flinders

Ed Walker’s MATTHEW FLINDERS proved a bit of a cliff horse for me last season! However, he did manage to do us a favour at Doncaster over that straight mile last September, suggesting that Sunday’s test will suit perfectly as well.

I’m sure as the season progresses he will end up being a 10-furlong performer, but this looks an ideal starting point over a mile. He will definitely see this trip out strongly and the champion jockey Oisin Murphy is booked. He’s an each-way price too.
