Paddy Power has picked out a bumper crop of punts ahead of action at Newbury and Ayr on Sunday.

13.00, Newbury – Masnoon
You’re clutching at straws and licking your finger then holding it in the air here with this race, but the one I’ve latched on to is MASNOON. The Stout stable are running at 50 per cent, with nine winners from 18 runners so far, so for that reason I’m going with this selection. But it’s purely based on that stat, and I don’t have a rashers if he’ll be any good. Until we see the market, it’s hard to know.
13.15, Ayr – King D’Argent
They all have chances in this one. KING D’ARGENT and Grand Sancy are vying for favouritism at the top of the market – one for Dan Skelton and one for Paul Nicholls. King D’Argent hacked up the last two times out so is obviously in good form and health, so it’s another one on Harry Skelton’s victory lap. I think he will get out front and win.
13.35, Newbury – Without A Fight
I think Al Aasy is going to be a pretty short-priced favourite, so I’m going for WITHOUT A FIGHT. He looked very good but then stepped up to 1m6f and got well beaten. Dropping back down to 1½m, he might be a little bit overpriced.

13.50, Ayr – Dead Right
I’m looking at the extra place to try and snap up some value, so I’m looking at DEAD RIGHT for JP McManus. On his day, he is pretty good – although that day doesn’t come around very often. He was actually behind The Shunter at Cheltenham and was never in the race, but this might be a more realistic target than the Festival. He could be in the mix.
14.10, Newbury – Lucid Dreamer
This is a proper race. I’ve gone for LUCID DREAMER, although Alcohol Free holds the key to the form for most of this field. If that form holds up, it’s proper Group 1 form but I’m more of a dreamer so the fact that Lucid Dreamer ran so green but was still dominant in her last race means she could be top draw. She could be very good.
14.25, Ayr – Anna Bunina
The Scottish Champion Hurdle is always an open race, and this renewal looks a very winnable race. For example, I’ve backed Thyme White about fifty times and he’s just not that good but he’s in the mix at the top of the betting, so that would suggest it’s not the best race ever. I would love to see a local trainer win it, but I’m going for another smash and grab job with ANNA BUNINA. I think Brian Hughes could get a big win under his belt, and this goes back to the Belfast Banter form – which is now Grade 1 form. Anna Bunina was 5½l behind in the County Hurdle, which isn’t that far, but was 125/1 that day. She outran her odds, and with Brian in the saddle that could be an each-way play.
14.45, Newbury – Chindit
This is generally an okay trial for the Newmarket classic. I started off with CHINDIT and said ‘okay, I’m going to find something to beat him’ but I just couldn’t. Fundamental is second-favourite but the way he has been tried, I don’t think he will be considered one of the best horses the Gosdens have ever had. Chindit is really straight forward, and on good ground he wins. It was soft in the Dewhurst when he was well-beaten into ninth but all of his form says he comes from the back, and makes smooth headway. It looks like everything comes easy to him and he has loads of ability. He will just be better than these.

15.00, Ayr – Tamaroc Du Mathan
I agree with Frank Hickey here and am backing TAMAROC DU MATHAN. Allmankind could blow them away but he has had a hard season and was aimed at Cheltenham while this was an afterthought. Tamaroc Du Mathan hasn’t run since he beat Ga Law at Kempton back in February, and has probably been waiting for good ground. He gets it here and Paul Nicholls has a great record in this race. Nicholls always finishes the season strongly and Tamaroc Du Mathan might be a bit of value against Allmankind.
15.20, Newbury – Matthew Flinders
I’m glad we’re putting on the extra places as I put a line through plenty of these. I eventually came down on MATTHEW FLINDERS because he hated the soft ground the last day, only finishing eighth. He won the time before and on decent ground he could get up in the mix.
15.35, Ayr – Soldier Of Love
Aye Right is at the top of the market here – Frank really fancied him for the Ladbrokes Trophy, and he was second in that. He is short enough for a horse that doesn’t win all that often, so I’m coming down on SOLDIER OF LOVE He’s near the top of the market, which is annoying because the form isn’t top class, but he’s a horse that knows how to win and loves the good ground. We haven’t seen him since November but he is good after a break. This will probably have been the plan for a while.
